Within Christianity,there are a variety of views on sexual orientation and homosexuality. Even within a denomination,individuals and groups may hold different views,and not all members of a denomination necessarily support their church's views on homosexuality.
The United Methodist Church (UMC) is a worldwide mainline Protestant denomination based in the United States,and a major part of Methodism. In the 19th century,its main predecessor,the Methodist Episcopal Church,was a leader in evangelicalism. The present denomination was founded in 1968 in Dallas,Texas,by union of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The UMC traces its roots back to the revival movement of John and Charles Wesley in England,as well as the Great Awakening in the United States. As such,the church's theological orientation is decidedly Wesleyan. It embraces liturgical worship,holiness,and evangelical elements.
Melquíades Rafael Ruiz Martínez is a Cuban-American lobbyist and former politician who served as a United States Senator from Florida from 2005 to 2009 and as general chairman of the Republican Party from November 2006 until October 19,2007. Previously,Martínez served as the 12th Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President George W. Bush. Martínez is a Cuban-American and Roman Catholic. He announced he was resigning as general chairman of the Republican National Committee on October 19,2007.
Richard Henry Carmona is an American physician,nurse,police officer,public health administrator,and politician. He was a vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and served as the seventeenth Surgeon General of the United States. Appointed by President George W. Bush in 2002,Carmona left office at the end of July 2006 upon the expiration of his term. After leaving office,Carmona was highly critical of the Bush administration for suppressing scientific findings which conflicted with the Administration's ideological agenda.
Harriet Ellan Miers is an American lawyer who served as White House Counsel to President George W. Bush from 2005 to 2007. A member of the Republican Party since 1988,she previously served as White House Staff Secretary from 2001 to 2003 and White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy from 2003 until 2005. In 2005,Miers was nominated by Bush to be an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor,but—in the face of bipartisan opposition—asked Bush to withdraw her nomination. Following her withdrawal in 2007,Miers returned to private practice,becoming a partner in the litigation and public policy group at Locke Lord.

The blessing or wedding of same-sex marriages and same-sex unions is an issue about which Christian churches are in ongoing disagreement. Traditionally Christianity teaches that homosexual acts are gravely sinful and that holy matrimony can only exist two persons of the opposite sex. These disagreements are primarily centered on the interpretation of various scripture passages related to homosexuality,sacred Tradition,and in some churches on varying understandings of homosexuality in terms of psychology,genetics and other scientific data. The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act is an American Act of Congress,passed on October 22,2009,and signed into law by President Barack Obama on October 28,2009,as a rider to the National Defense Authorization Act for 2010. Conceived as a response to the murders of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr.,both in 1998,the measure expands the 1969 United States federal hate-crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim's actual or perceived gender,sexual orientation,gender identity,or disability.
Methodist viewpoints concerning homosexuality are diverse because there is no one denomination which represents all Methodists. The World Methodist Council,which represents most Methodist denominations,has no official statements regarding sexuality. British Methodism holds a variety of views,and permits ministers to bless same-gender marriages. James P. Gray II is the current Kentucky Secretary of Transportation in the administration of Governor Andy Beshear. He is the former mayor of Lexington,Kentucky from 2011 to 2019. Gray served as the city's vice-mayor from 2006 to 2010 before being elected mayor in November 2010. Gray won re-election to another four-year term on November 4,2014.
