Jo Ann Smith (born May 9, 1939) was inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in 2015. She is the first woman to become the president of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. [1]

Life

Jo Ann Smith was born Jo Ann Doke was born on May 9, 1939. [2] [3] Smith grew up in Alachua County, Florida. Smith first worked in her family business, Smith Brothers Farming, Ranching, and Construction Companies in Wacahoota, Florida. She worked her way up and started working for several agriculture organizations. From 1970 to 1972, she held the position president of the Florida Cattlewomen's Association. [3] When Jo Ann was 18 years old, she married Cedrik Smith. Cedrik was also from Wacahoota, Florida, a small town just outside Gainesville, Florida. Cedrik came from a family who farmed vegetables and raised cattle. The Smiths raised two children: a son and a daughter. [2]

Career

Smith continued to work in agriculture. In 1985, she was named the Woman of the Year in Agriculture by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. [2] In 1984, she was appointed to the Governor's Task Force on the Future of Florida Agriculture. In 1985, Smith became the first woman to hold the position of president for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. She was the founding chair of the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board. In 1989, she was appointed by President George H. W. Bush as the Assistant Secretary of Marketing and Inspection of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. [1] [3] [4]

Through the 1990s, Smith continued to work at her family's ranch while still working in commercial agriculture. She served on the corporate board of Purina Mills. She also worked on the corporate boards for Iowa Beef Producers and Tyson Foods, Inc. Smith has worked diligently throughout her career to improve issues that affect consumers. [2]

Joann Smith, as an under secretary at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the early 90s, made the decision to allow pink slime, once reserved as strictly dog food, to be sold for human consumption. Smith later stepped down from her government position and joined the board of directors of Beef Products Inc., the top pink slime manufacturing company, receiving compensation of over $1.2 million over some 17 years. It collects funds through a checkoff mechanism that is sometimes called checkoff dollars, from producers of a particular agricultural commodity and uses these funds to promote and do research on that particular commodity. As stated earlier the organizations must promote their commodity in a generic way without reference to a particular producer. Checkoff programs attempt to improve the market position of the covered commodity by expanding markets, increasing demand, and developing new uses and markets. Checkoff programs amount to $750 million per year.

The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is located in Fort Worth, Texas, US. Established in 1975, it is dedicated to honoring women of the American West who have displayed extraordinary courage and pioneering fortitude. The museum is an educational resource with exhibits, a research library, and rare photography collection. It adds Honorees to its Hall of Fame annually.

The beef clod or shoulder clod is one of the least expensive cuts of beef and is taken from the shoulder (chuck) region of the animal. Beef clod is a large muscle system, with some fat that covers the muscles. Pink slime is a meat by-product used as a food additive to ground beef and beef-based processed meats, as a filler, or to reduce the overall fat content of ground beef. As part of the production process, heat and centrifuges remove the fat from the meat in beef trimmings. The resulting paste, without the fat, is exposed to ammonia gas or citric acid to kill bacteria. In 2001, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved the product for limited human consumption. The product, when prepared using ammonia gas, is banned for human consumption in the European Union and Canada.

Fern Sawyer was an American cowgirl, rodeo champion, politician and inductee into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame and the Rodeo Hall of Fame of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. She was the first woman to win the cutting horse competition at the 1945 Fort Worth Fat Stock Show and Rodeo. Sawyer was also the first woman appointed to the New Mexico State Fair Board. She was well known for her "flashy attire," according to the Santa Fe New Mexican. She lived in Crossroads, Lovington, and Nogal, New Mexico. She was also a charter member of the National Cutting Horse Association and the first director of the Girls Rodeo Association.

Mollie Taylor Stevenson Scott, a former model, is the daughter of Benjamin Franklin "Big Ben" Stevenson and Mollie Stevenson (1911-2003). Mollie Jr. and her mother were the first living African-American women inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. She and her husband, Elicious Scott Jr., taught and connected children and adults with Western culture and agriculture.

Nancy Sheppard is a ProRodeo Hall of Fame trick rider and trick roper who was inducted in 2003.

Jo Decker was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2001.

Minnie Lou Bradley was inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in 2006. Bradley is considered an innovator in the beef cattle industry.

Sandy Collier was inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in 2011. Collier was named one of the "Top 50 Riders of All Time in All Disciplines” by Horse & Rider magazine.

Linda Mitchell Davis was inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in 1995.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mindy Brashears</span> American civil servant (born 1970)

Mindy Brashears is the former Under Secretary for Food Safety at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She was nominated by President Donald J. Trump and confirmed by a Senate vote on March 23, 2020 and concluded her service on January 20, 2021. Her responsibilities in this role included leading the nation's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and its team of over 10,000 food inspectors and scientists. She chaired the Codex Alimentarius Policy Committee, which made her the highest-ranking food safety official in the U.S. government during her tenure.
