Jorma Juhani Valtonen (born 22 December 1946) [1] is a Finnish former professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the SM-liiga. He played on the Finland men's national ice hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics, and was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989, and into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1999. He later coached the Finland women's national ice hockey team, and was a goaltending coach in the Kontinental Hockey League.

Career

Valtonen was born in Turku, Finland, and played for Jokerit, TPS, RU-38 and Ässät. In Italy Valtonen played for HC Gherdëina and HC Alleghe. Valtonen took part in the 1972 training camp for the NHLs Toronto Maple Leafs. In West Germany he played for EHC 70 München on season 1980–81. Valtonen was the goalie for the Finland men's national ice hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Valtonen has been an Italian league champion and a three-time Finnish league champion.[ citation needed ]

After retiring, Valtonen became a coach. He was head coach of the Finland women's national ice hockey team and the TPS women's team before becoming the goaltending coach of the Kontinental Hockey League's Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. He was not aboard the flight of the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash, when all players from the main roster, four players from the youth team, and eleven staff members perished in that crash, except for main roster player Maxim Zyuzyakin, who was also not aboard the plane. Valtonen was asked to stay behind to work with the junior team. [2]

In 2015, Valtonen returned to Italy to become goaltending coach of his former team HC Gherdëina. He currently serves as goaltending coach of Asiago.[ citation needed ]

Honors

He was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989, and into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1999. [3]

The 2011–12 KHL season was the fourth season of the Kontinental Hockey League. The regular season began with the Opening Cup game on 7 September 2011, but because of the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash, which occurred during the first period of the Cup game and killed all but one member of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team, further play was delayed until 12 September 2011. The tragedy forced Lokomotiv Yaroslavl to cancel their participation in the KHL season. The Opening Cup was renamed the Lokomotiv Cup in honor of those lost in the tragedy. The regular season ended on 26 February 2012 and the following playoffs ended on 25 April.

Mikhail Yuriyevich Balandin was a Russian professional ice hockey player. Balandin played for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) at the time of his death. Balandin had also played for Salavat Yulaev Ufa, HC Lada Togliatti, HC CSKA Moscow, Khimik Mytishchi, Atlant Mytishchi and UHC Dynamo in Russia. Balandin won a silver medal with the Russian team at the 2000 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

Maxim Alexeyevich Shuvalov was a Russian professional ice hockey player who at the time of his death would have played for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League.

The 2011–12 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl season was the franchise's 52nd season of play in professional ice hockey in Russia. It was supposed to be its fourth season in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). The season was scheduled to start on 8 September 2011. However, on 7 September, while traveling to their season opener, the team's plane crashed, killing 44 people, including 25 roster players, and 11 members of the team staff. Alexander Galimov survived the initial impact of the crash with severe injuries, but died on 12 September. Another roster player, Maxim Zyuzyakin, did not travel with the team on the plane. As a consequence, the league cancelled the 7 September Opening Cup game between Salavat Yulaev and Atlant already in progress, postponing the opening of the KHL season until 12 September.

Turun Palloseura Naiset, abbreviated TPS Naiset, are an ice hockey team in the Finnish Naisten Liiga. They play in Turku, Southwest Finland at the Kupittaan jäähalli and the Impivaaran jäähalli. The team has played in the Naisten Liiga, the Finnish Championship league for women's ice hockey, since gaining promotion in the 2018–19 season.
