KOSMICA

KOSMICA is an institute that runs poetical and critical projects about outer space activities and their impact on Earth. Its central activity is a series of curated festivals worldwide with over 20 editions in countries like UK, France, Mexico and Belgium. KOSMICA also counts with other activities such as educational programmes, publishing and other curated activities. It has local offices in Berlin (Germany) and Mexico City (Mexico), with partner organisations in London (UK) and Montreal (Canada).

History

KOSMICA Institute was founded in 2011 by Berlin-based artist Nahum in partnership with The Art Catalyst in London. It started as ¨a series of galactic gatherings for earth-bound artists, space engineers, performers, astronomers, musicians and anyone interested, explore and share space in original ways. Every session is unique: bringing together the cosmically curious and culturally quirky space community.¨ [1] [2]

Today KOSMICA organises regular festival with over 20 international editions and 180 guests from all around the globe. Its curated programmes have included topics such as feminism, queer culture, climate change, colonialism and art in outer space.

KOSMICA is endorsed by ITACCUS, the International Astronautical Federation Technical Committee for the Cultural Utilizations of Space. [3]

Participants

KOSMICA activities have put together an international network of artists, cultural practitioners and space professionals. Among the 180 participants are Kevin Fong, Tomás Saraceno, Ariel Guzik, Aleksandra Mir, Empress Stah, Yuri Suzuki, Honor Harger, Roger Malina, [5] Marko Peljhan, Nelly Ben Hayoun, Katie Paterson, Agnes Meyer-Brandis, Kapwani Kiwanga, Bompas & Parr, Frederik De Wilde, Nicola Triscott, Anais Toneur, Carey Young, Christopher Riley, Dragan Živadinov, Sarah Jane Pell, Semiconductor, Angelo Vermaulen (Seeker), Richard Clar, Patricio Guzmán, Tania Candiani and Nahum.

Institutions and Collaborators

The KOSMICA Institute has collaborated with museums and institutions such as The Arts Catalyst (London), Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, FACT (Liverpool), Z33 (Hasselt), Oboro (Montreal), Laboratorio Arte Alameda (Mexico City), Centro de Cultura Digital (Mexico City), Centro Multimedia (Mexico City), Mexican Space Agency (Mexico), International Space University (Strasbourg), International Astronautical Federation, IAF (Paris), Hangar 1 (Berlin), La Colonie (Paris), amongst others.

KOSMICA Journeys

In 2017 KOSMICA partnered up with local organisations and governmental bodies to start a new strand of projects aimed at those who have flown away from their homes for safety and survival reasons. KOSMICA Journeys offers a series of activities for refugees and immigrants to use the outer space perspective and reframe our understanding of Earth as the home of humanity and all its life beyond nations and states.

KOSMICA Journeys started with a collaboration with Hangar 1 in Berlin. Over a month KOSMICA delivered weekly workshops at the refugee center located at the Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin.

Space art Visual art genre

Whatever the stylistic path, the artist is generally attempting to communicate ideas somehow related to space, often including an appreciation of the infinite variety and vastness which surrounds us. In some cases, artists who consider themselves Space Artists use more than illustration and painting to communicate scientific discoveries or works depicting space, some have had the opportunity to work directly with space flight technology and scientists in attempts to expand the arts, humanities, and cultural expression relative to space exploration.

Per Hüttner Swedish artist

Per Hüttner is a Swedish visual artist who lives and works in Paris. He is mostly known for his photographic work and for his interactive, changing and travelling exhibition projects. A number of monographs about his practice has been published including Per Hüttner, 2003; I am a Curator, 2004; Repetitive Time 2006, Xiao Yao You2006, Democracy and Desire 2007. The Imminent Interviews 2010 and The Quantum Police 2011.

Allan Sekula was an American photographer, writer, filmmaker, theorist and critic. From 1985 until his death in 2013, he taught at California Institute of the Arts. His work frequently focused on large economic systems, or "the imaginary and material geographies of the advanced capitalist world."

Paul Morrison (artist) English painter

Paul Morrison is a British artist. He was born in Liverpool and received a BA in fine art from Sheffield City Polytechnic. He continued his studies at Goldsmiths College of Art in London, where he received his MA. His first one-person show was in London in 1996 and since then he has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries Worldwide. Morrison lives and works in Yorkshire.

Roberta Silva is an artist based in Milan and Lake Garda.

Rosa Barba is a German-Italian visual artist and filmmaker. Barba is known for using the medium of film and its materiality to create cinematic film installations, sculptures and publications, which inquire into the ambiguous nature of reality, memory, landscape and their role in their mutual constitution and representation. Her engagement with analogue film has been linked to the work of other contemporary practitioners such as Matthew Buckingham, Tacita Dean, Luke Fowler, and Ben Rivers. Barba currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

José-Carlos Mariátegui is a scientist, writer, curator and scholar on culture, new media and technology. Born in 1975, he is the son of Peruvian psychiatrist Javier Mariategui and the grandson of Jose Carlos Mariategui, the most influential Latin American Marxist thinker of the 20th Century. He studied Mathematics and Biology at Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Perú and did both Masters and Doctoral degrees in Information Systems and Innovation from the London School of Economics and Political Science – LSE (London). Has been involved in teaching and research activities, as well as published a variety of articles on art, science, technology, society and development. He founded Alta Tecnología Andina (ATA), non-profit organization dedicated to the development and research of artistic and scientific theories in Latin America. Founder of the International Festival of Video and Electronic Art in Lima (1998–2003). Founding Director of the Memorial Museum of José Carlos Mariátegui of the Ministry of Culture in Peru.

Nahum B. Zenil is a Mexican artist who often uses his own self-portrait as the principal model for a cultural critical interpretation of Mexico, especially concerning homosexuality and mestization. Zenil was born in 1947 in the state of Veracruz. In 1959, he enrolled at the Escuela Nacional de Maestros in Mexico City, from which he graduated in 1964. It was during this period in which Zenil became interested in painting. He later entered the Escuela Nacional de Pintura y Escultura in Mexico City in 1968. He is also one of the founding members of the Semana Cultural Gay, which occurs yearly at the Museo Universitario del Chopo. His art is often compared to that of Frida Kahlo, in which the self becomes the principal object of their paintings letting the viewer discover the artists as individuals as well as the broader social and cultural contexts in which they lived through the medium of self-portraiture.

Arts Catalyst

Arts Catalyst is a London-based contemporary arts organisation, known for its commissioned artists' projects, as well as being involved in art and science in the UK.

Iván Abreu Abreu's received his degree in Informational Design from the Superior Design Institute of La Habana and took the master's degree of Engineering Information Technology at the Anáhuac University. Abreu's work has been written about in ["(ready)Media. Hacia una arquitectura de los medios y la investigación en México"], "The visual artbeat" and "CódigoDF". His work is included in public and private collections as FEMSA; Patronato del Centro Histórico, Casa Vecina; Televisa and Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo. He currently holds the grant awarded by the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte of FONCA (2016–2019) and has received grants and support by 2012 ThePrix Ars Electronica ; the CINTAS Foundation Award in Visual Arts, Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte of FONCA (2012–2014), 2011–2012 and the Program for research in Arts and Media at the National Center for the Arts (2007).

Lili Dujourie is a Flemish visual artist who works primarily in sculptures, paintings, and video. She has held numerous solo and group exhibitions since 1968 and continues to make art today.

Muu Blanco Venezuelan artist

Muu Blanco, is a multidisciplinary Venezuelan artist. He works in the plastic arts, performance, drawing, photography, electronic music, conceptual video, and handbag design. His compositions have been presented locally as well as internationally, including in cities like: New York City, Berlin, Miami, Barcelona, Bogota, Buenos Aires, London, Vancouver and Milan. His work has been regarded as a criticism to power, wealth and narcissism, as well as commentary on the urban landscape of modern Caracas.

Sol Rezza

Sol Rezza is a composer, audio engineer and radio producer; specialist in sound design and composition in the field of experimental music and radio art for various media, theater, festivals and installations.

Nahum (artist) German artist

Nahum, is an artist, musician, multi-instrumentalist, performer and artistic director who lives and works in Berlin, Germany. His work combines outer space technologies, illusionism, and hypnosis to create alternative and extreme perspectives of human experience.

Thom Kubli is a Swiss-German composer and artist known for installation art and sculptures that often deploy sound as a significant element, using digital technologies and material configurations that increase the viewers' spatial perception.

Tania Candiani is a Mexican artist known for her interdisciplinary, large-scale, multimedia installations. In 2011, she was named a Guggenheim Fellow.

Petrit Halilaj is a Kosovar visual artist living and working between Germany, Kosovo and Italy. His work is based on documents, stories, and memories related to the history of Kosovo.
