Accidents

On 19 August 2017, heading to Haridwar in Uttarakhand from Puri in Odisha, the Kalinga-Utkal Express derailed with fourteen coaches of the train going off track in Khatauli in Uttar Pradesh. [2] [3] The incident resulted in the death of 23 people while injuring 40 others. Minister for Railways, Suresh Prabhu, ordered an inquiry into the incident. [4]

From April 2021, the service to Dehradun was discontinued permanently and was diverted permanently to Yog Nagari Rishikesh and was renamed as Kochuveli - Yog Nagari Rishikesh Superfast Express. The slip coaches to Haridwar also discontinued and extended to Yog Nagari Rishikesh. Therefore it won't go to Dehradun; instead it was diverted permanently to Yog Nagari Rishikesh.

Rishikesh railway station, station code RKSH, is a railway terminal station serving the city of Rishikesh in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It lies on Northern railway network zone of Indian Railways. It is no longer the only station in Rishikesh, as another one has been built to increase capacity, known as Yog Nagari Rishikesh railway station, located 2 km to the west of Rishikesh station.

The 2015 Uttar Pradesh train accident occurred on 20 March 2015. The Dehradun Varanasi Janata Express derailed near Bachhrawan in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, northern India, resulting in at least 58 deaths and 150 people being injured. The accident was attributed to brake failure.

On 19 August 2017, the Kalinga Utkal Express train derailed near Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, India causing fatalities: 23 people were killed and 156 others were injured. This was the fourth major passenger train derailment in 2017 and the third in Uttar Pradesh.

Khatauli railway station is a railway station in Khatauli, a tehsil of Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh. Its code is KAT.. There is stoppage of 27 trains per day at Khatauli station. In these 12 trains are Express trains, 9 Passenger trains, 6 MEMU trains. Some important trains are Nauchandi Express (Prayagraj–Saharanpur), Yoga Express (Ahmedabad–Haridwar), Bandra Terminus–Dehradun Express, Shalimar Express, Delhi–Ambala Cantonment Intercity Express, Chhattisgarh Express etc. The station consists of two platforms. The platforms are well sheltered. It has many facilities including water and sanitation.

On 23 August 2017, the Kaifiyat Express train derailed between the Pata and Achalda railway stations in Auraiya district of Uttar Pradesh, India, injuring at least 80 people. This was the second train derailment within a week after the Kalinga Utkal Express derailed near Khatauli on 19 August 2017 in the Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh.
