Kay Michille Brummond is an American synthetic chemist who is Professor of Chemistry and Associate Dean of Faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. Her interests consider cycloaddition reactions that can realise molecules and natural products for organic photovoltaics and targeted covalent inhibitors. She was elected a Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in 2010, a Fellow of the AAAS in 2021, and awarded the ACS National Award for Encouraging Women into Careers in the Chemical Sciences in 2021.

Early life and education

Brummond grew up in the town of Herman in eastern Nebraska. [1] She grew up on a corn and soybeans farm, and was the first member of her family to attend college. She attended the Tekamah-Herman High School and earned her undergraduate degree in secondary education (B.S.) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. [1] [2] She moved to Pennsylvania State University for her doctoral research, where she focused on organic synthesis with Raymond L. Funk. [3] In 1991, she joined the University of Rochester, where she spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher with Robert K. Boeckman, Jr. [1]

Research and career

In 1993, Brummond joined the faculty at West Virginia University, where she was promoted to associate professor. She moved to the University of Pittsburgh in 2001, where she was promoted to professor in 2006 and elected department chair in 2014. [1] Brummond served as the Associate Dean of Faculty for the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh (2017–2023).

Brummond studies the Pauson–Khand reaction, targeted covalent inhibitors, [4] transition-metal catalyzed cyclocarbonylation, and dearomative cycloaddition reactions. [2] She works on the design, synthesis, and characterization of guaianolide analog covalent inhibitors with muted reactivity to thiols. In particular, she is interested in identifying the structure–activity relationships of these analogs. To assemble the 5,7,5-ring system, Brummond uses an allenic Pauson–Khand reactions and other cyclization process. To regulate the thiol reactivity and increase affinity for the kinase and protease targets, Brummond modifies the covalent reactive groups.

She has designed novel transition metal catalysts, including Rh(I). She has shown that stereoconvergent allenic Pauson–Khand reactions catalysed by Rh(I) can result in highly enantioselective 5,7-ring systems, which enable the enantioselective synthesis of compounds such as thapsigargin. [4] Her approach includes collaborations with computational chemists for the rational design of transition metal catalysts and ligands through analysis of transition-state structures and energies to achieve stereoselective reaction products.

Academic service

Brummond has advocated for women and underrepresented groups in science. [5] She has worked with both her home institutions and the American Chemical Society to improve gender balance, and recognized for this work as the Diversity Catalyst Lecturer by the Open Chemistry Collaborative in Diversity Equity (OXIDE) partnership mechanism in 2014. She established the University of Pittsburgh Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, which offers research placements to undergraduate students. [6] She launched various outreach programs to introduce young girls to scientific careers. Brummond has created a list of actions that people can take to become an ally to women working in chemistry, namely; [1]

  1. Inviting a woman chemist to give a seminar;
  2. Engaging with women’s research;
  3. Developing an inclusivity and/or diversity statement together with your research group;
  4. Nominating a woman for an award;
  5. Educating yourself on gender disparities, and barriers, and know the data;
  6. Celebrating the chemistry achievements of women;
  7. Working to prepare the next generation of women chemists;
  8. Mitigating unconscious biases through your actions; and
  9. Working to fix the institution not the individual.

Donna M. Huryn is an American medicinal and organic chemist. She received her B.A. (chemistry) from Cornell University, and Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. She is on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh’s school of pharmacy, holds an adjunct appointment in the department of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, is the principal investigator of the University of Pittsburgh Chemical Diversity Center, and was a visiting fellow in the summer of 2017 at the University of Bologna. She is a fellow of the American Chemical Society, recipient of the ACS Philadelphia Local Section Award, has held a number of elected positions within the American Chemical Society at both the local and national levels, and is 2015 Chair of the Division of Organic Chemistry. Huryn also formed, along with a number of other scientists, the Empowering Women in Organic Chemistry Conferences in 2019. The goal was to empower and bring the research and career of all marginalized individuals in chemistry-related fields to the forefront of the scientific community. Huryn noticed how there was not enough women pursuing and maintaining a career in organic chemistry, and thus founded this organization. The Empowering Women in Organic Chemistry Conferences allowed for women leaders to present their scientific findings and hear the stories of how eminent women in the field of organic chemistry overcame the challenges they faced being female. She is associate editor of ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters. She in also an editor of the journal Organic Reactions and co-authored the textbook Medicinal Chemistry and the article "Medicinal Chemistry: Where Are All the Women?" which appeared in the ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters Journal. Huryn’s research focuses on the design and synthesis of small molecules probes and drugs to treat cancer, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases.

Prof Peter Ludwig Israel Pauson FRSE FRIC (1925–2013) was a German–Jewish emigrant who settled in Britain and who is remembered for his contributions to chemistry, most notably the Pauson–Khand reaction and as joint discoverer of ferrocene.

Corinna S. Schindler is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Michigan. She develops catalytic reactions with environmentally benign metals such as iron, towards the synthesis of biologically active small molecules. For her research in the development of new catalysts, Schindler has been honored with several early-career researcher awards including the David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship in 2016, the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship in 2017, and being named a member of the C&EN Talented 12 in 2017. Schindler has served on the Editorial Board of Organic and Bimolecular Chemistry since 2018.

Vy Maria Dong is a Vietnamese-American Chancellor's Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). Dong works on enantioselective catalysis and natural product synthesis. She received the Royal Society of Chemistry's Merck, Sharp & Dohme Award in 2020, the American Chemical Society's Elias James Corey Award in 2019, and the UCI's Distinguished Alumni Award in 2018.

She has been awarded the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, Thieme Award and was selected by the University of Chicago as a Rising Star in Chemistry.

Jennifer Schomaker is an American chemist who is a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her research considers the total synthesis of natural and unnatural products. She was selected as an American Chemical Society Arthur C. Cope Scholar Awardee in 2021.

Rebekka Klausen is an American chemist who is the Second Decade Society Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University. Her research considers carbon and silicon-based nanomaterials for optoelectronic devices. She was a finalist for the 2021 Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists.

Alison Wendlandt is an American chemist who is an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her research considers the development of catalysts for organic synthesis.
