Kelvin Keith Chapman (born June 2,1956) is a retired Major League Baseball player. He played his entire Major League career with the New York Mets.
Kelvin Chapman attended Santa Rosa Junior College. [1] He was signed by the Mets organization as an amateur free agent on December 3,1975. [2] His first season as a professional was with the Met's Rookie League team,Marion Mets of the Appalachian League in 1976. That season he played 62 games and had a batting average of .269,a slugging percentage of .347,and an on-base percentage of .342. [3]
The following year he was promoted to the Mets A-league team,the Wausau Mets of the Midwest League. In 127 games his batting average improved to .306,his slugging percentage improved to .456 and his on-base percentage improved to .378. [3]
This performance led to another promotion to the Mets AA-league team,the Jackson Mets of the Texas League for the 1978 season. The team featured several other future New York Mets players,including Mookie Wilson,Neil Allen and Jeff Reardon. Chapman played 131 games for Jackson,129 of which were at second base. [4] He posted a batting average of .266,a slugging percentage of .383,and an on-base percentage of .347. [3]
Although he had never played AAA baseball,and although his performance at Jackson was not outstanding,Chapman had an excellent spring training in 1979 for the Mets and earned a spot as the Mets starting second baseman to begin the season. He replaced strong fielding but light hitting Doug Flynn,who was the Mets regular second baseman in 1978. Chapman's major league debut occurred on April 5,1979 against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. [5] He got 2 hits in 5 at-bats in his debut. [5] However,Chapman only batted .150 for the Mets in 80 at bats that season, [1] [2] relinquishing the starting second base job back to Flynn by late April. He was sent to the minors in May,returning to the Mets only in September after the minor league season ended.
Chapman played for the Mets AAA-league team,the Tidewater Tides of the International League for most of the 1979 season. He played 106 games as second base for the Tides,with a batting average of .241,a slugging percentage of .318 and an on-base percentage of .341. [1]
From 1980 through 1983 Chapman played in AAA without getting back to the Major Leagues. [1] He played with Tidewater in 1980,1982 and 1983,and with the Syracuse Chiefs in 1981. [1] During that time he played primarily second base,but also played a few games at third base,shortstop and outfield. [1] He batted poorly in 1980 and 1981 but improved in 1982 and 1983. He also played for Tidewater at the beginning of 1984. [1]
The Mets regular second baseman in 1984 was Wally Backman,a switch hitter who was much better when batting lefty. The Mets needed a right-handed hitting second baseman to platoon with Backman. After Chapman got off to a strong start with Tidewater in 1984, [1] he was recalled to the Mets in May,more than 4 years after his previous Major League game in 1979. His first game for the Mets in 1984 was on May 6. [6] Chapman played 75 games for the Mets in 1984,finishing with a batting average of .289,a slugging percentage of .401 and an on-base percentage of .356, [2] helping the Mets finish 2nd in the National League East. [7] Chapman also posted a league average fielding percentage in 57 games at second base of .979 that season,also playing 3 games at third base for the Mets. [2]
In 1985,Chapman continued to platoon with Backman as the Mets second basemen. On June 1,1985,the Mets were playing the San Diego Padres and were down 2-0 when the Mets rallied for three runs in the sixth inning,a rally that was spurred on by Chapman and Ray Knight. Chapman got the rally going by leading off the inning with a single. Not long after Knight singled,George Foster hit a ball that scored both Chapman and Knight. [8] However,Chapman did not hit as well as he did the prior season. With a batting average of just .174, [2] Chapman was sent back to the Tidewater Tides after playing his last Major League game on July 24,1985. [1] [2] Chapman batted just .185 with Tidewater in 1985 [1] and was released by the Mets after the season on November 13,1985. [2] The Mets did make an offer to remain in the organization,as perhaps a manager in their farm system,but Chapman,who had injured his knee during the 1985 season,opted to retire and return home to California. Hubert "Hubie" Brooks is an American former professional baseball right fielder,third baseman,and shortstop. He played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1980 to 1994 for the New York Mets,Montreal Expos,Los Angeles Dodgers,California Angels,and Kansas City Royals. Brooks was selected third overall in the 1978 Major League Baseball draft by the New York Mets and went on to play for five different teams over a 15-year career,and was twice named an All-Star. MLB pitcher Donnie Moore was Brooks' cousin.

Louis Rodman Whitaker Jr.,nicknamed "Sweet Lou",is an American former professional baseball second baseman. Whitaker spent his entire career with the Detroit Tigers. From 1977 to 1995,he appeared in 2,390 games for the Tigers,third most in franchise history behind Ty Cobb and Al Kaline. He helped the Tigers win the 1984 World Series,was selected as an American League All-Star five consecutive years (1983–1987) and won four Silver Slugger Awards and three Gold Glove Awards (1983–1985). The Tigers retired his No. 1 jersey in August 2022.
Howard Michael Johnson,nicknamed "HoJo",is an American former professional baseball third baseman. He played for the Detroit Tigers,New York Mets,Colorado Rockies,and Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1982 to 1995. He has also coached in MLB for the Mets and Seattle Mariners.
Darrell Wayne Evans is an American former baseball player,coach and manager. He played 21 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB),beginning his career as a third baseman with the Atlanta Braves,alternating between first and third base with the San Francisco Giants (1976–1983),and playing much of his later career as a first baseman and then a designated hitter for the Detroit Tigers (1984–1988). He won a World Series championship with the Tigers in 1984. Evans had most of his success in the early and late stages of his career. He was a two-time All-Star,first with the Braves in 1973 and then with the Giants in 1983. He led MLB in home runs in 1985 with the Tigers,and walks in 1973 and 1974 with the Braves.
Walter Wayne Backman is an American former Major League Baseball second baseman. He is best known for his time with the New York Mets from 1980–1988 and was a member of their 1986 World Series-winning team. He was also the former manager for the Las Vegas 51s,the Mets' Triple-A team,from 2013 to 2016. He served as the bench coach for the Pericos de Puebla of the Mexican Baseball League in 2017. Backman was the manager of the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball,until October 2,2023,it was announced that the Ducks and Backman have parted ways.
JoséManuel Oquendo Contreras,nicknamed "the Secret Weapon",is a Puerto Rican former infielder and current coach in Major League Baseball (MLB). He currently serves as Minor League Infield Coordinator of the St. Louis Cardinals,an organization with whom he has been affiliated since 1985. He managed the Puerto Rico national team in the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classics. During his playing career,Oquendo proved highly versatile defensively:he played primarily second base and shortstop,but also frequently in the outfield,and made at least one appearance at every position during his MLB playing career. Oquendo has the second-highest career fielding percentage for second basemen at .9919 (99.19%),behind only Plácido Polanco's career mark of .9927 (99.27%).
Michael Jorgensen is an American former professional baseball first baseman and outfielder who currently works in the St. Louis Cardinals' front office. The New York Mets drafted him in the fourth round of the 1966 Major League Baseball Draft. In a 17-year Major League Baseball (MLB) playing career spanning from 1968 to 1985,he played primarily with the Mets and Montreal Expos and had brief stints with the Cardinals,Atlanta Braves,Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics. He also has served as a manager for the Cardinals. Jorgensen is the only major league baseball player to have been born the day Babe Ruth died.
Timothy Shawn Teufel is an American former professional baseball second baseman and current coach. He played Major League Baseball from 1983 to 1993,most notably as a member of the New York Mets with whom he won a world championship in 1986. He also played for the Minnesota Twins and the San Diego Padres. He is currently a New York Mets minor league instructor and club ambassador. Teufel became known for his batting stance,the "Teufel shuffle",in which he wiggled his buttocks back and forth before the pitcher's delivery.

His hit came on the only Major League pitch he ever faced;author George Rose estimates that his Major League career as a hitter thus lasted only about 20 seconds. He scored a run later in the inning. He also caught one inning with one putout for a lifetime fielding percentage of 1.000.
