Khorshid (The Sun in English) was a Persian daily published in Iran briefly between October 2008 and March 2009. The daily supported former President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad.

History and profile

Khorshid was established in October 2008 by Muhammad Paryab who was an aide to the former President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad. [1] [2] The paper was owned by the Social Security Organization. [3] [4] The daily was managed by Saeed Mortazavi. [3]

Khorshid was a full color tabloid daily and provides news about all topics from political issues to sports and soap operas. [5] Robert Tait of The Guardian described it as The Sun newspaper of Iran. [1] Khorshid folded in March 2009 due to the economic problems and resignation of journalists. [1]

Political leaning

The daily advocated Mahmoud Ahmedinejad in the 2009 presidential election. [3]

Presidential elections were held in Iran on 12 June 2009, with incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad running against three challengers. The next morning the Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran's news agency, announced that with two-thirds of the votes counted, Ahmadinejad had won the election with 62% of the votes cast, and that Mir-Hossein Mousavi had received 34% of the votes cast. There were large irregularities in the results and people were surprised by them, which resulted in protests of millions of Iranians, across every Iranian city and around the world and the emergence of the opposition Iranian Green Movement.

The Cabinet of Iran is a formal body composed of government officials, ministers, chosen and led by a President. Its composition must be approved by a vote in the Parliament. According to the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the President may dismiss members of the cabinet, but must do so in writing, and new appointees must again be approved by the Parliament. The cabinet meets weekly on Saturdays in Tehran. There may be additional meetings if circumstances require it. The president chairs the meetings. The "deviant current" or "current of deviation" is a term used by Iranian officials and conservative rivals of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to describe Ahmadinejad's entourage which functions like a faction or party. Ahmadinejad had some tendency toward Iranian nationalism which deviated from the clerics' theocratic rule, hence top clerics labeled the faction associated with him as "deviant current".
