Lilian Imuetinyan Salami (born 8 August 1956) is a Nigerian academic who was appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Benin in 2019. [1] [2] She is the second female vice-chancellor of the university after Grace Alele-Williams in 1985. [3] [4] She was director-general/chief executive of the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), Ondo State, Nigeria. [5]

A former dean, faculty of education at the University of Benin, [6] Salami is a Fellow of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria and International Federation of Home Economics/Home Professional Association of Nigeria. [7]

Salami is a professor of home economics/nutritional education and a member of the advisory council to the Oba of Benin, Omo N'Oba N'Edo, Ukukpolokpolo, Ogidigan, Oba Ewuare II. [8] [9]

Early life and education

Salami was born in Jos, Nigeria. However, she is from Edo, specifically a Bini woman. [10] [11] [12] She began her early childhood education in Jos, Plateau State, but due to the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970 she went to secondary school in Edo State, where she earned a West African School Certificate (WASC) under the auspices of Baptist High School, Benin City. [13] She earned B.Sc. (Hons) home economics degree in 1972 and M.Sc. nutrition degree in 1982 at North Dakota State University, United States. [14] [15] She was at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota for summer classes before transferring to North Dakota State University, where she later completed her studies after marrying in 1977. [16] [17] She returned home and worked with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Benin City between 1983 and 1984. [18] [19]

She carried out post-graduate studies at the University of Nigeria from 1989, earning a Ph.D. in human nutrition in 1991. [20] [21] While lecturing at the University of Benin, she enrolled as a student there and earned a postgraduate diploma in education (PGDE) in 2001. [22]

She took a post-doctorate degree at Vaal University of Technology, Vanderbijlpark in South Africa in 2005. [23] [24]

Career

Salami began her career with the University of Benin as a senior lecturer in 1994. Prior to her appointment with this institution, she had briefly taught at the then University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University having completed her national youth service with the NYSC, Benin City in 1984. Subsequently, she lectured at the University of Maiduguri from 1985 to 1994. [25]

She was head of department from 1996 to 1998 at the University of Benin and attained the status of a professor in 2005. Held administrative positions such as chairman of the board of University of Benin Integrated Enterprise, director of general studies, director of part-time programme, director-general/chief executive, National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), Ondo State. Salami supervised over 15 Ph.D. and 40 master's degree students. [26]

Salami has published articles in national and international journals, and has taught several courses within the scope of Home Economics and Nutrition. [27]

Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola OON(born 1958) is a Nigerian professor of medical microbiology, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos. She specializes in disease control, particularly HIV/AIDS. Ogunsola was provost of College of Medicine, University of Lagos and is reputed as being the first woman to occupy the position. She was also the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the institution between 2017 and 2021. She was acting vice chancellor of the University of Lagos for a short period in 2020 when the university was plunged into crisis as a result of the removal of the Vice Chancellor by the University Council.

Abiodun Falodun is a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry from Nigeria. He was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the University of Benin and currently the Rector of Edo State Polytechnic, Usen. He was appointed by the Governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki and sworn in on April 4, 2018.

Florence Banku Obi is a Nigerian academic, author and a professor of education with specialization in psychology and special needs education. She is the 11th substantive vice-chancellor of University of Calabar and the first female vice-chancellor since the inception of the institution. After her appointment as the new VC, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege who chairs the Senate Adhoc Committee on Constitution Review, described Prof. Obi as “an astute educational icon.” She was previously the deputy vice-chancellor, academics and commissioner for women affairs in Cross River State. She was a candidate in the 2015 VC election but was not elected until 2020 when she became the first woman to be elected. Nnenna Nnannaya Oti is a Nigerian professor and the first female substantive Vice-Chancellor of Federal University of Technology Owerri. Oti defeated Ikechukwu Dozie on 13 April 2021 and has resumed office as the 8th Vice-Chancellor of the institution on 19 June 2021.

Federal University Wukari is located in the town called Wukari in Taraba State, Nigeria.

Osarhieme Osadolor is a Nigerian professor of history and International studies. He is the author of the collection: Cradle of Ideas, A Compendium of Speeches and Writings of Omo N’Oba Erediauwa of Great Beni and former dean of student affairs at the University of Benin. On May 10, 2021, he was appointed as the acting vice-chancellor of the Ambrose Alli University where he served for 10 months until his removal on February 8, 2022.
