Mercy University is an independent, coeducational institution serving nearly 9,000 students each year across campuses in Westchester, the Bronx, Manhattan, as well as online. It is a federally designated minority-serving institution and the largest private Hispanic Serving Institution in the state of New York. Mercy was founded in 1950 by the Sisters of Mercy. Mercy University had more than 70,000 alumni as of 2023. [1] The now-defunct College of New Rochelle's alumni have been merged into the Mercy University alumni community. The university was historically affiliated with the Catholic church, but has been independent and non-sectarian since the early 1970s, though it retains its historical affiliation with the Sisters of Mercy.
