Patras is Greece's third-largest city and the regional capital of Western Greece, in the northern Peloponnese, 215 km (134 mi) west of Athens. The city is built at the foot of Mount Panachaikon, overlooking the Gulf of Patras.

Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Patras, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 98.983 km2. The municipal unit had a population of 14,622 in 2011. The campus of the University of Patras and the Casino Rio is located in Rio.

The city is located in the middle of a plain, 4 kilometres from the Ionian Sea. The river Alfeios flows into sea about 7 km (4 mi) south of Pyrgos. The population of the town Pyrgos is 25,180, and of the municipality 47,995 (2011). Pyrgos is 16 km (10 mi) west of Olympia, 16 km (10 mi) southeast of Amaliada, 70 km (43 mi) southwest of Patras and 85 km (53 mi) west of Tripoli.

Vasilissis Sofias Avenue is a major avenue in the east side of the center of Athens, the Greek capital. The avenue was originally part of the Kifisias Avenue. The part from Syntagma Square to the intersection with Alexandras Avenue was renamed after Queen Sophia, the consort of King Constantine I. The avenue begins at the intersections of Amalias Avenue and Panepistimiou Street and ends by Alexandras, Kifissias and Mesogeion Avenues as well as Feidippou Street, with a total length of approximately 3 km. A section of the avenue is part of the old GR-1, and a branch of GR-54.

Agios Andreas Hospital is a hospital in Patras, Achaea, Greece. It is the second largest hospital in the city of Patras and one of the largest in Peloponnese with a total capacity of 400 beds . The hospital occupies 5 buildings of which the 3 are situated close to each other. The main multi-storey building of the hospital was struck by an earthquake in 2008 and it is completely restored. Additionally, the central building is upgraded with new medical and hotel equipment. The renovated 7-storey building was finally inaugurated in July 2017 after 3 years of delays. This multi-storey building houses the departments of ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology, plastic surgery and urology, internal medicine/pathology and cardiology paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology . In 2011 the construction of a new wing was completed and today in houses three clinics: The surgery clinic, the pathology clinic and the orthopaedic clinic.

The railway from Piraeus to Patras was a 230-kilometre long metre-gauge railway line in Greece that connected the port of Athens, Piraeus with Patras in the Peloponnese peninsula, via Athens "Peloponnese" central station and Corinth. It was opened between 1884 and 1887. Formerly one of the main lines of the Greek railway network, it has now largely fallen into disuse. It has mostly been replaced by the Athens Airport–Patras railway, a new standard-gauge line whose first section opened in 2004 and which remains under construction between Aigio and Patras. The 13 km section between Piraeus and Agioi Anargyroi, a northern suburb of Athens, has since been removed and replaced by the corresponding section of the upgraded Piraeus–Platy railway. As of 2020, the only sections in operation are the 22.5 km section between Agioi Anargyroi and Eleusis, and the 7.3 km section between Rio and Patras.
