This is a list of universities in Nigeria. Nigeria is organised into 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. As a result of the oil boom years of the 1970s, tertiary level of education was expanded to reach every sub-region of Nigeria. [1] [2] The federal and state governments were previously the only bodies licensed to operate universities. Recently, licenses have been granted to individuals, corporate bodies and religious bodies to establish private universities in the country.
The National Universities Commission [3] [4] (NUC) is the major accreditation and regulatory body that enforces uniform standard and sets admissions capacity of every Nigerian university. [5]

Bauchi is a city in northeast Nigeria, the Administrative center of Bauchi State, of the Bauchi Local Government Area within that State, and of the traditional Bauchi Emirate. It is located on the northern edge of the Jos Plateau, at an elevation of 616 m. The Local Government Area covers an area of 3,687 km2 and had a population of 493,810 in 2006.
The University of Calabar is a federal university situated in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. It is one of Nigeria's second-generation federal universities. American University of Nigeria The American University of Nigeria (AUN) is a private university in Yola the capital of Adamawa, Nigeria. It offers an American-style liberal arts higher education at undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels. Founded in 2003, AUN, Africa’s first “Development University,” is accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Its current faculty numbers 93, its undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 1500 students. It is known as the first American-style university in Sub-Saharan Africa. AUN is accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Benson Idahosa University (BIU) is a private, Christian university in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Previously named Christian Faith University (CFU), it was renamed in honor of Archbishop Benson Idahosa, a Charismatic Pentecostal minister from Benin City, Nigeria, and reflects his evangelical beliefs. He was the first president of the university. The current president of Benson Idahosa University, Rt. Rev. The National Universities Commission (NUC) is a government commission for promoting quality higher education in Nigeria. Situated in Abuja, it was established in 1962 as an advisory agency in the cabinet office. In 1974, it became a statutory body and its first executive secretary was professor Jibril Aminu. NUC is currently part of the Federal Ministry of Education and is a parastatal.

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE) in Delta State, Nigeria was established and approved during the Federal Executive Council meeting of 14 March 2007 and admitted its first set of undergraduates in 2008.
The Imo State University (IMSU) in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria was established in 1981 through law No. 4 passed by the Imo State House of Assembly. The university admitted the first intake of 392 pioneer students on 23 October 1981.
Higher education accreditation is a type of quality assurance process under which services and operations of post-secondary educational institutions or programs are evaluated to determine if applicable standards are met. If standards are met, accredited status is granted by the agency.
Novena University is the first private university in Delta State located in Ogume, Delta State, Nigeria. Nile University of Nigeria (NILE) is a private multidisciplinary university established in 2009 and located in Abuja, Nigeria. It is a member of the Honoris United Universities Network and accredited by the National Universities Commission. Currently, it has eight faculties and a School of Postgraduate Studies offering 34 undergraduate programs and 47 postgraduate programs.

The National University Commission (NUC) granted operational license to Ritman University on March 5, 2015, the university began academic activities on November 23, 2015. Ritman University was founded by Emmanuel Ibok Essien, a former Senator who represented the North West Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State at the 4th Nigerian National Assembly (Senate) between (1999-2003). Senator Essien established the university according to him as “a response to the yearning of renascent Africans for an entrepreneurial university that develops the mind for total productivity, inculcate positive values and offers resources for navigating the world with ease”. Ritman University has an estimated student population of about 1,000 students spread across its three faculties.
Greenfield University is a private university in Kaduna, Kaduna State, Nigeria. It was established in January 2019, and commenced the 2018/19 session in May 2019. According to the pro chancellor Simon Nwakacha, "the university has completed arrangement to start with three faculties, namely; the faculty of social and management sciences, faculty of engineering and the faculty of science and technology."
