Maia Simmonds (born 8 June 1986 in Perth) is an Australian former representative rower. She is a three-time national champion, rowed for her home state of Western Australia in both lightweight and heavyweight crews, in sculling and sweep-oared boats and won a silver medal at the 2014 World Rowing Championships.
Raised in Perth, Simmond's senior rowing club rowing was from the University of Western Australia. In 2010 she rowed in the Uni of WA women's eight which won the Intervarsity Championship at the 2010 Australian Universities Championships. [1]
Simmonds made her first state representative appearance for Western Australia, in the 2011 women's lightweight quad scull which contested the Victoria Cup and placed second at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. [2] In 2012 and 2013 she rowed in victorious West Australian quads which won the Victoria Cup national title at the Interstate Regatta. [3] She stroked the winning 2013 crew [4] and stroked further West Australian Victoria Cup quads in 2014, 2015 and 2016. [5] In 2015 and 2016 she rowed in Western Australia's heavyweight women's eights contesting the Queen's Cup at the Interstate Regatta. [6]
In 2014 in Uni of WA colours she contested the open lightweight single sculls national title at the Australian Rowing Championships and placed fourth. [7] In 2015 she won the national title in a coxless pair with Megan Bagworth at the Australian Rowing Championships. [8] She also contested the lightweight double scull at those championships and placed second with Janelle Austin. [9]
Simmonds made her Australian representative debut in the lightweight quad scull contesting the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled. They rowed to a sixth placing. [10] She held her seat in that crew into 2012 when they contested the World Championships in Plovdiv and finished in fifth place. [10]
In 2013 Simmonds moved into the Australian lightweight double scull with Alice McNamara. They raced at the World Rowing Cup I in Sydney and then at the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju, they missed the A final and placed overall seventh. [10] In 2014 Simmonds was in contention for various lightweight sculling crews. She rowed in the double with the veteran lightweight Hannah Every-Hall to gold at the World Rowing Cup I in Sydney and then at two further WRCs in Europe she raced as a single sculler to the B finals time. Simmonds and Every-Hall made the Australian quad scull for the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam and rowed that boat to a silver medal with Sarah Pound and Laura Dunn. [10]
In 2015 Simmonds took over the stroke seat in the lightweight quad scull from Every-Hall and Georgia Miansarow joined the crew. Simmonds stroked the quad to a fourth placing at the 2015 World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette. It was Simmonds' last Australian representative appearance. [10]
Sally Newmarch, now known as Sally Callie, is an Australian former rower – a four-time national champion, a medal winning national representative who competed at World Rowing Championships from 1993 to 2004 and a three time Olympian.
Marguerite Houston is an Australian former lightweight rower. She is an Australian national champion, an Olympian and two-time World Champion. She contested state representative events at nine successive Australian Rowing Championships.
Miranda Bennett is an Australian former rower who won three World Championship titles.
Hannah Every-Hall is an Australian former rower, a national champion, World Champion and Olympian. She is married to Michael Hall and they have a son named Harrison Hall
Rebecca Susan Joyce is an Australian former rower, a sculler in the lightweight division. She was a five-time national champion, a 1995 world champion and Olympic medal winner.
Gary Joseph James Lynagh is an eleven time Australian national champion, three time World Champion and Olympian lightweight rower. He represented Australia at every premier international regatta from 1990 to 1998.
Alice McNamara is an Australian former representative lightweight rower. She was a national champion and a back-to-back world champion in 2007 and 2008. She represented Australia at nine successive World Rowing Championships in lightweight sculling events.
Ingrid Fenger is an Australian former representative lightweight rower. She was twice a national champion and a 2008 world champion.
Alexander (Steve) Purnell is an Australian rower. He is an Olympic and national champion who has represented at underage and senior world championships. In 2018 in an Australian eight, he won the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta. He rowed in the bow seat of the Australian men's coxless four to a gold medal victory at the Tokyo Olympics.
Laura Dunn is an Australian former lightweight rower. She is a three-time national champion and won a silver medal at the 2014 World Rowing Championships.
Sarah Pound is an Australian former representative lightweight rower. She is a three-time national champion and won a silver medal at the 2014 World Rowing Championships.
Georgia Miansarow is an English born, Australian representative lightweight rower. She is a three-time national champion and won medals at both World Rowing U23 Championships and senior World Rowing Championships in crewed sculling boats.
Georgia Nesbitt is an Australian former representative lightweight rower who made 10 representative appearaances for Australia between 2013 and 2022. She was an seven-time national champion and she won a silver medal at the 2017 World Rowing Championships. In 2022 prior to a serious cycling accident, she competed in Australian Road National championships and had qualified to participate in her age group at the 2023 Ironman World Championships in Helsinki.
Alice Arch is an Australian former representative lightweight rower. She was a national champion and won a silver medal at the 2017 World Rowing Championships.
Amy James is an Australian representative lightweight rower. She is a two-time national champion and won a silver medal at the 2017 World Rowing Championships.
Perry Ward is an Australian national representative lightweight rower. He rowed in Western Australia's state selection lightweight crew for thirteen consecutive years from 2006 to 2018, winning the national title on four occasions. He represented Australia at eight senior and U23 world championships, stroking every crew in which he was selected and winning a silver medal at the 2010 World Rowing Championships.
Simon Nola is an Australian former national representative lightweight rower. He won a silver medal at the 2013 World Rowing Championships.
Paul Francis Rowe was an Australian representative rower and elite level rowing coach. He was an eight-time Australian national champion in both sweep oared and sculling boats across both lightweight and open divisions. He was Australia's lightweight sculling representative at the 1975 World Rowing Championships. He coached scullers and crews to three Australia national title wins and to world championships and to Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
Hamish Parry is a former Australian representative lightweight rower. He was a nine-time national champion in both sculling and sweep-oared crews and has sculled at underage and senior world championships from 2013 to 2021.
Caitlin Cronin is an Australian national representative rower. She is a national champion, won a silver medal at 2017 World U23 Championships and is an Olympian. She stroked the Australian women's quad scull at Tokyo 2021 to a bronze medal.
