Martin County School District, also referred to officially as the School Board of Martin County, is a public school district that covers Martin County, Florida. [3]

Contents

The position of superintendent is appointed by the school board. [4] Its former Superintendent, Laurie J. Gaylord, was first elected in 2012, with her second term ending in November 2020. Following a decision by voters in 2018, the next Superintendent was appointed rather than elected. The first appointed superintendent, John D. Millay, took office in 2020. [5] The district is overseen by the Martin County School Board, a body of five elected officers. [6]

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appointed former Panama City, Florida City Manager Mark McQueen, a retired U.S. Army Major General to the position in August 2023 after the previous superintendent Bill Husfelt retired early in his term after being elected to the board in 2008.

The 1933 Treasure Coast hurricane was the second-most intense tropical cyclone to strike the United States during the active 1933 Atlantic hurricane season. The eleventh tropical storm, fifth hurricane, and the third major hurricane of the season, it formed east-northeast of the Leeward Islands on August 31. The tropical storm moved rapidly west-northwestward, steadily intensifying to a hurricane. It acquired peak winds of 140 mph (220 km/h) and passed over portions of the Bahamas on September 3, including Eleuthera and Harbour Island, causing severe damage to crops, buildings, and infrastructure. Winds over 100 mph (160 km/h) affected many islands in its path, especially those that encountered its center, and many wharves were ruined.

Dunbar Elementary School is a former elementary school for African-American students in Hobe Sound, Florida. It was part of the Martin County School District and was named for African-American author Paul Laurence Dunbar. It closed in 1969. One factor is that it was too small and the site not appropriate for expansion.

Stuart Training School, in Stuart, Florida, was the high school for African Americans in Martin County, Florida during segregation. C.E. Murray was principal from 1925 to 1939. His brother Robert G. Murray was principal from 1945 to 1958. Its building at 800 SE Bahama Avenue, still in use by the School's successor, Spectrum Junior/Senior High School, opened in 1931.

Peter B. Licata is an American educator and the superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, the sixth-largest school district in the United States and the second largest in the state of Florida. He became the superintendent of Broward County Public Schools on July 11, 2023.
