Mary Jane Saunders

Mary Jane Saunders is an American academic who served as president of Florida Atlantic University from 2010 to 2013. She has a background in scientific research and administration, specializing in biology.

Saunders is originally from Worcester, Massachusetts. She completed a B.A. in biology at Boston University, and then pursued further studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, completing an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in botany. She is married to chemistry professor George R. Newkome. [1] After a period as an associate professor at Louisiana State University, she joined South Florida University in 1986, eventually becoming director of its Institute of Biomolecular Science. She also worked at the National Science Foundation for a period as a program officer and deputy division director. [2]

In 2003, Saunders joined Cleveland State University, Ohio, as a biology professor and director of the Biomedical and Health Institute. She was later made dean of the College of Science, and from 2007 was provost and executive vice-president. [3] [4] In 2010, Saunders left CSU to replaced Frank Brogan as president of Florida Atlantic University. [5] She resigned as president in May 2013, citing "fiercely negative media coverage" as one of the reasons for her decision. [6] During her tenure, the university was criticized for awarding naming rights for FAU Stadium to GEO Group, a private prison company, and for its handling of associate professor James Tracy's promotion of Sandy Hook massacre conspiracy theories. Howard Leslie Schnellenberger was an American football coach with long service at both the professional and college levels. He held head coaching positions with the National Football League's Baltimore Colts and in college for the University of Miami, University of Oklahoma, University of Louisville, and Florida Atlantic University. He won a national championship with Miami in 1983. Schnellenberger also worked extensively as an assistant coach at the college and pro levels, including as part of the staff of the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins. He is also famous for having recruited Joe Namath to Alabama for Bear Bryant in 1961.

The Florida Atlantic Owls football program represents Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in the sport of American football. The Owls compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the East Division of Conference USA (CUSA). The Owls' head coach from 2019 to 2022 was Willie Taggart. Florida Atlantic has produced a Sun Belt Conference co-championship team in 2007, two Conference USA championships in 2017 and 2019, along with 4 postseason bowl appearances and one appearance in the 2003 I-AA Playoffs. The Owls play their home games at FAU Stadium which has a seating capacity of 29,419.

Robert Armistead Bryan was an American former university professor, administrator and university president. Bryan was a native of Pennsylvania, and earned his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees. He subsequently obtained an appointment as a professor of English literature. He was a long-time professor and academic administrator at the University of Florida, and was appointed as the university's interim president, serving from 1989 to 1990. Bryan also served as the interim president of the University of Central Florida from 1991 to 1992, and the interim president of the University of South Florida from 1993 to 1994.

Carl Anthony Pelini is an American football coach. He served as defensive coordinator at Youngstown State University for the 2019 season. Pelini previously served as the head coach of Florida Atlantic from 2012 to 2013. He is the older brother of Bo Pelini, the former defensive coordinator at LSU and former head coach at Youngstown State.

He is also director of the National Science Foundation's Industry and University Cooperative Research Center for Advanced Knowledge Enablement at FAU. In 2019, he was inducted into Academia Europaea, which is The Academy of Europe.
