Career

Walker began playing music in public at the age of 14 at the Selby Folk Club. He played at Port Fairy Folk Festival, National Folk Festival, Bridgetown Blues Festival, East Coast Blues and Roots Festival until the age of 18.Walker joined The Broderick Smith Band playing dobro, guitar and lap steel and toured extensively around Australia. Walker played on and wrote music for Broderick Smith albums My Shiralee, Songster and Crayon Angels from 1994 to 1996. [3]

In 1995, Walker recorded Live at the Rainbow with Ashley Davies on drums, Andrew Entsch on double bass and Jerry Hale on fiddle and guitar before recording There's Life in 1996. [3]

In 1997, Walker released I Listen to the Night with Ashley Davies. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1998, I Listen to the Night was nominated for two ARIA Awards. [4] In 1998 and 1999, Walker toured across Europe and North America. [3]

In 2000, Walker recorded Soul Witness with Ashley Davies on drums, Chris Abrahams on piano and Ken Gormley on bass and toured with this line up. [3] At the ARIA Music Awards of 2000, Soul Witness won the ARIA Award for Best Blues and Roots Album. [5]

In 2003, Walker formed the electric trio The Necessary Few with Grant Cummerford on bass and Roger Bergodaz on drums and recorded the album Navigational Skills. [3]

Walker contributed songs for the soundtrack Australian Rules , which won the ARIA Award for Best Original Soundtrack, Cast or Show Album at the 2003 awards. Walker contributed two original songs for the Australian film Somersault in 2004.

On 5 September 2005, Walker and Davis released the self-titled album on Walker's label Stovepipe Records. [3]

Since 2013, Walker has been part of and releasing music under Lost Ragas. The Lost Ragas are Matt Walker, Shane Reilly, Simon Burke and Roger Bergodaz.

While predominantly known as a musician and singer-songwriter, Matt Walker is also an accomplished and in-demand music producer whose credits include Broderick Smith, [6] Mick Daley, [7] Liz Stringer's Pendulum [8] and the Ben Mitchell AKA Benjamin Grant Mitchell 2019 release, Slow Is The New Fast. [9]

The Dingoes are an Australian country rock band. They were initially active from 1973 to 1979, and reformed in 2009. Initially based in Melbourne, the band relocated to the United States from 1976. The most stable line-up comprised John Bois on bass guitar, John Lee on drums, Broderick Smith on vocals and harmonica, Chris Stockley on guitar, and Kerryn Tolhurst on guitar. Mal Logan on keyboards joined after Stockley was hospitalised when shot in the stomach by Melbourne drug-dealer, Dennis Allen, who was attempting to gate crash a party. The Dingoes' debut single, "Way Out West", was released in November 1973, and peaked in the top 40 of the Australian Kent Music Report singles chart. Subsequent singles were "Boy on the Run", "Smooth Sailing", and "Into the Night", which did not reach the top 50. They had three top 40 albums, The Dingoes in 1974, Five Times the Sun in 1977, and Orphans of the Storm in 1979.

The John Butler Trio are an Australian roots/rock band led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler, an APRA and ARIA-award-winning musician. They formed in Fremantle in 1998 with Jason McGann on drums, Gavin Shoesmith on bass and John Butler on vocals. By 2009, the trio consisted of Butler with Byron Luiters on bass and Nicky Bomba on drums and percussion, the latter being replaced by Grant Gerathy in 2013. After both Luiters and Gerathy exited the trio in early 2019, bassist OJ Newcomb and drummer Terepai Richmond joined the band, accompanied by touring musician Elana Stone on keyboards, percussion and backing vocals.

Ian Richard Moss is an Australian rock musician from Alice Springs. He is the founding mainstay guitarist and occasional singer of Cold Chisel. In that group's initial eleven year phase from 1973 to 1984, Moss was recorded on all five studio albums, three of which reached number one on the national Kent Music Report Albums Chart. In August 1989 he released his debut solo album, Matchbook, which peaked at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart. It was preceded by his debut single, "Tucker's Daughter", which reached number two on the related ARIA Singles Chart in March. The track was co-written by Moss with Don Walker, also from Cold Chisel. Moss had another top ten hit with "Telephone Booth" in June 1989.

My Shiralee is a studio album by Australian blues and country musician, Broderick Smith, which was released in 1994 on the Newmarket Music label. Smith provided lead vocals, harmonica and wrote lyrics for ten of the twelve tracks. His backing band included Tony Day on drums; Gerry Hale on mandolin, fiddle and autoharp; Michel Rose on pedal steel; and Matt Walker on acoustic guitar, dobro, lap steel. The Age's Mike Daly rated the album as one of his top ten releases of the year. A CD version of My Shiralee was issued in 1998.
