Mehdi Zakerian, Visiting Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, the University of Pennsylvania, President of Iranian International Studies Association, Editor-in-chief of International Studies Journal (ISJ) . [1]

A scholar of international law and international human rights, Zakerian holds a Ph.D. in international relations from Islamic Azad University where he has been an assistant professor since 1999. With over 16 years of experience teaching international and Islamic human rights, he has held lectureships at prominent Iranian universities and was appointed Chair of the International Studies Association of Iran. As co-founder and Editor-in-Chief (2004-date) of the International Studies Journal, widely considered the most significant journal of international law and international politics in Iran, [2] Zakerian promotes one of the few forums of academic dialogue in Iran to regularly publish and engage with colleagues from the West. He has collaborated with local and international universities and NGOs to organize several conferences at which he has presented papers on international relations and human rights in the Middle East.

Zakerian has penned over 50 publications including books, translations, book reviews and over 100 published articles, many focused on the implementation of international human rights standards in the context of an Islamic state. [3] On this subject, Dr. William Burke-White, Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School writes, "this is perhaps the most important topic for international human rights scholarship in the modern context and [this scholar's] work is among the best there is." [4] Zakerian was scheduled to join Penn Law in 2008 but was detained for 72 days by Iranian government. [5]

Vali Reza Nasr is an Iranian-American academic and author, specializing in the Middle East and the Islamic world. He is Majid Khaddouri Professor of International Affairs and Middle East Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C. He served as the eighth dean of the school from 2012 to 2019. Nasr is also a Non-Resident Fellow in South Asia at Atlantic Council and is described by The Economist as "a leading world authority on Shia Islam".

Brenda Shaffer is an American scholar who holds positions as Fellow with the Atlantic Council and professor at University of Haifa. Shaffer was the former research director of the Caspian Studies Program at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and past president of the Foreign Policy Section of the American Political Science Association. She specializes on energy in international relations and energy policy in the Caspian region and has written or edited several books of these topics, including "Energy Politics" and "Beyond the Resource Curse." Shaffer has also written a number of books on the topic of identity and culture in the Caucasus including explorations of Azeri literature and culture. She has been accused of lobbying for Azerbaijan and failing to disclose conflicts of interest.

Ahmed Shaheed

Ahmed Shaheed is a Maldivian diplomat, politician and professor. On 24 March 2016, he was appointed for the sixth year running as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Dr Shaheed is also the Chairperson of the Geneva-based international human rights think-tank, Universal Rights Group, which was launched in January 2014. He now lives in England, as Visiting Professor of Human Rights Practice at the University of Essex.

Elham Manea is of dual nationalities, Yemeni and Swiss. She works as a Privatdozentin and specialized on the Middle East, a writer, and a human rights activist. She has been a vocal advocate for the separation of state and religion in Islamic countries, freedoms of expression and belief, and the defence for civil, human, women's, and minorities rights in the Arab MENA region. She is also known as a harsh critic of the ideologies and policies of Islamist movements in its two forms, Societal Islamism and political Islamism.
