Michael Shafer (born January 7, 1972) [1] is an American college basketball coach, most recently the women's head coach at the University of Richmond. Shafer played at the College of William & Mary, where he walked on to the team. He was on the coaching staff at the University of Georgia from 1996 to 2005 before becoming head coach of the Spiders. [2]
He holds the record for the number of wins by a women's basketball coach at the University of Richmond.
It was announced on March 10, 2019, that Shafer's contract would not be renewed. [3]

The Robins Center is a 7,201-seat multi-purpose arena in Richmond, Virginia. Opened in 1972, the arena is home to the University of Richmond Spiders basketball. It hosted the ECAC South men's basketball tournament in 1983. It is named for E. Claiborne Robins Sr, class of 1931, who, along with his family, have been leading benefactors for the school. The opening of the Robins Center returning Spider basketball to an on-campus facility for the first time since the mid-1940s when it outgrew Millhiser Gymnasium. In the intervening decades, the Spiders played home games in numerous locations around the Richmond area, including the Richmond Coliseum (1971–1972), the Richmond Arena (1954–1971), the Benedictine High School gymnasium (1951–1954), Grays' Armory (1950–1951) and Blues' Armory (1947–1950). The Robins Center arena serves as the location of the University of Richmond's commencement exercises and hosted a 1992 Presidential debate involving Bill Clinton, George H. W. Bush, and Ross Perot.
John Patrick Beilein is an American professional basketball coach who currently serves as the Senior Player Development Advisor for the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before being hired by Detroit, Beilein served as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Prior to joining the Cavaliers, he coached the Michigan Wolverines (2007–2019), West Virginia Mountaineers (2002–2007), Richmond Spiders (1997–2002), Canisius Golden Griffins (1992–1997) in NCAA Division I as well as Le Moyne College (1983–1992), Nazareth College (1982–1983) and Erie Community College (1978–1982). Beilein has won 754 career games at four-year universities and 829 games altogether, including those at the junior college level. Beilein’s overall career wins counting the time spent in Cleveland is 843 games.
Tracy Michael Woodson is an American former professional baseball player and college coach. He played all or part of five seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), from 1987 to 1989 and 1992 to 1993, primarily as a third baseman. He currently coaches the Richmond Spiders baseball team.
The Richmond Spiders represent the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. The Spiders compete in the Division I FCS of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference for most sports.
Christopher Scott Mooney is an American college basketball coach and the current head men's basketball coach at the University of Richmond. Prior to taking the helm of the Spiders basketball program, he was the head coach at Air Force. In his only year there, he led the Falcons to their second best record in school history (18–12). He played college basketball at Princeton. As a four-year starter at Princeton, he ranks 22nd on the school's all-time leading scoring list with 1,071 points, and 11th in three-point field goals made (142).
Dick Tarrant was the head men's basketball coach at the University of Richmond from 1981 through 1993. Tarrant, led the Spiders to five NCAA Tournament and four NIT berths in his twelve seasons as head coach—the first postseason appearances in school history.
Michael Perry is an American college basketball coach who last served as an assistant men's basketball coach at East Carolina University. Prior to joining the Pirates program, he served as the head men's basketball coach at Georgia State University from 2003 through 2007, and also held assistant coaching positions at Georgia State, Richmond and Virginia Union University. Perry also served as interim head coach of East Carolina for most of the 2017-18 season, as head coach Jeff Lebo underwent hip surgery and stepped down from the position on November 29, 2017.

Michael Shafer assumes the responsibility as head coach for his tenth season. The Spiders were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference and play their home games at the Robins Center. They finished the season 19–14, 9–7 in A-10 play to finish in fifth place. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Women's Tournament where they lost to Fordham. They were invited to the Women's National Invitation Tournament where defeated Stetson in the first round before losing to a A-10 member Duquense in the second round.
Marvin Jackson "Jack" Null was an American college basketball coach. A native of Staunton, Virginia and a graduate of the University of Richmond, Null coached the Virginia Military Institute basketball team for three years in the 1950s. In addition to his service to VMI, Null headed Richmond's freshman teams in football, basketball, and baseball for four seasons. He also coached Lake Worth High School in Lake Worth, Florida.

They were led by 15th-year head coach Chris Mooney and played their home games at the Robins Center as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Spiders finished the season 24–7, 14–4 in A-10 play to finish in second place. Their season ended when the A-10 Tournament and all other postseason tournaments were canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Aaron Roussell is an American college basketball coach, currently the women's head coach at the University of Richmond. Roussell is a 2001 graduate of the University of Iowa and he began his college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Minnesota State. After two seasons there, Roussell spent eight years as head women's basketball coach at the University of Chicago. Roussell then spent seven seasons as head coach at Bucknell University before being named head coach at Richmond on April 2, 2019.
