Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa (born 11 November 1972) is a Nigerian lawyer and politician who has served as speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015. [1]

Early life

Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa was born in Agege, a town in Lagos State southwestern Nigeria on 11 November 1972. [2] He had his primary education at St Thomas Acquinas Pry School, Surulere, Lagos before he proceeded to Archbishop Aggey Memorial Secondary school, Mushin, Ilasamaja, Lagos where he obtained the West Africa School Certificate. [3] He received a bachelor's degree in Law from Lagos State University, Lagos in the year 2006. [4]

Political career

In 1999, he contested the seat of councilor at Agege local government under the Alliance for Democracy party and won. He served between 1999 and 2002. [5]

He was elected to the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Agege Constituency I in 2007. He was reelected in 2011, 2015 2019, 2023. [6] [7]

Amidst the #EndSARS saga in his home state, he was recorded on live TV saying "the LSHA will not acknowledge the death of miscreants at the hands of the Police Force" when calling for the one-minute silence for the victims of the #LekkiMassacre and others across Nigeria. [8]

Corruption Scandal

In 2020, The Sahara Reporters reportedly released allegation reports on misappropriation of public funds against him. He however denied all the allegations. [9] [10] [11] [12]

Sahara Reporters later reported that Obasa was taken in for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on 8 and 9 October.2020. According to an inside source confirmed to SaharaReporters that Obasa feigned sickness during the interrogation at the EFCC’s office, which caused interrogation to be stopped. Obasa had to be taken to the EFCC office's sick bay before being released on bail. [13] Obasa then supposedly requested the return of his passport, ostensibly to seek medical treatment abroad before going on Umrah to meet with Bola Tinubu in Saudi Arabia. Obasa remains under investigation by the EFCC for allegations of misappropriation and fraud. [14]

The Lagos State House of Assembly is the state legislature of Lagos State. It is situated along Governor's Avenue in the state capital, Ikeja. The House of Assembly is currently under the All Progressives Congress political party which is the current ruling party in Lagos State. There have been nine different house of assemblies, the first one was inaugurated 2 October 1979 and the present one was inaugurated 7 June 2019. There are forty members of the House of Assembly, two represent one of the twenty various local government areas in Lagos.

The 8th Lagos State House of Assembly is the legislative branch of the Lagos State Government inaugurated on June 8, 2015. The assembly will run its course till June 3, 2019. The assembly is unicameral with 41 representatives elected from each constituencies of the state. The incumbent Speaker of the 8th Legislative Assembly is Rt. Hon Mudashiru Obasa and the Deputy speaker is Hon. Eshinloku Sanni. The election of representative for the 8th legislative assembly was held on April 28, 2015.

Peter Onyeluka Nwaoboshi is a Nigerian politician. He is the senator representing Delta North senatorial district in the Nigerian Senate. He is a senator of the 8th and 9th National Assembly. He was sacked shortly after being announced senator elect during the 2019 general elections by a Federal High Court in Abuja as Senator-elect on allegations that he was not validly elected by his political party. The Appeal Court in Abuja however overturned the decision on 30 May 2019. The lead judge held that the Federal High Court that nullified his election had no jurisdiction over the case.

The 2019 Lagos State House of Assembly election was held on 9 March 2019, to elect members of the Lagos State House of Assembly in Nigeria. All the 40 seats were up for election in the Lagos State House of Assembly. APC won all the 40 available seats.

The 2015 Lagos State House of Assembly election was held on 11 April 2015, to elect members of the Lagos State House of Assembly in Nigeria. All the 40 seats were up for election in the Lagos State House of Assembly. APC won 32 seats, while PDP won 8 seats.

The 2019 Ekiti State House of Assembly election was held on March 9, 2019, to elect members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly in Nigeria. All the 26 seats were up for election in the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Lagos State was held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Lagos State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections coincided with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.
