The National Student Media Awards or Smedias [1] are an annual All-Ireland student journalism competition run by the Oxygen.ie website. [2] [3] The awards have been labelled "Ireland's premier student awards". [4] [5]

History and format

Since 2000, Oxygen.ie, a website aimed at third-level students, has run a student journalism competition. [6]

As of the 2020 awards, submissions are invited in a number of categories. [7] [8] These included Editor of the Year (previously won by UCD's University Observer ), [9] Magazine of the Year (previously won by DCU's Flux ), [9] Newspaper of the Year (including previous winners The University Times , [10] Trinity News , [11] and University Observer), Sports Writer of the Year (previously won by The College View ), [11] and Website of the Year (previously won by Sin.ie). The National University of Ireland, Maynooth, commonly known as Maynooth University (MU), is a constituent university of the National University of Ireland in Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland. It was Ireland's youngest university until Technological University Dublin was established in 2019, as it was founded by the Universities Act, 1997 from the secular faculties of the now separate St Patrick's College, Maynooth, which was founded in 1795. Maynooth is also the only university town in Ireland, all other universities being based within cities.

Michael D. Higgins President of Ireland (2011–present)

Michael Daniel Higgins is an Irish politician, poet, sociologist, and broadcaster, who has served as the ninth president of Ireland since November 2011. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Galway West constituency from 1981 to 1982 and 1987 to 2011. He served as Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht from 1993 to 1997 and mayor of Galway from 1981 to 1982 and 1990 to 1991. He was a senator from 1973 to 1977, after being nominated by the taoiseach and from 1983 to 1987 for the National University of Ireland. He was the President of the Labour Party from 2003 to 2011, until he resigned following his election as president of Ireland.

Mullingar is the county town of County Westmeath in Ireland. It is the 3rd most populous town in the Midlands region, with a population of 20,928 in the 2016 census.

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is the national representative body for third-level students' unions in Ireland. Mary O'Malley is an Irish poet whose work has been published in various literary magazines. She has published seven poetry books since 1990 and her poems have been translated into several languages.

Sin Newspaper is a student newspaper in Galway, Ireland. Its offices are based at NUI Galway. Sin is published fortnightly and covers news about Galway events on and off campus, while its entertainment and features sections aim to entertain and provoke debate and shape opinion. Sin accepts articles from past and present students and lecturers and staff. Sin was founded in 2001 and replaced the University College Galway student periodical Unity, which was published from 1959 until the late 1990s. Sin was printed in tabloid size across 32 pages until 2020 when it moved online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rouzbeh Rashidi is an Iranian avant-garde filmmaker associated with the Remodernist film movement.

The Piranha is the official satirical newspaper of Trinity College Dublin. Formerly known as Piranha! magazine, it was rebranded in 2009. It is a member of Trinity Publications and is written entirely by students of the university. The first edition claimed that it was established in 1843, and the newspaper's official webpage claims it was first published in 1682, but official college records state that the publication was founded in 1978.

Belfield FM is University College Dublin's student radio station. The station began broadcasting in 1990. It was initially run as a part of the UCD Students' Union, under the remit of the entertainments office, before becoming an independent entity within the Students' Union (SU). Belfield FM disaffiliated with the SU at the end of the 2011/2012 college year, and is now run independently within the UCD Societies Council framework. The station forms part of UCD's "Student Media Network", along with The University Observer and The College Tribune. The station is run by volunteer staff and contributors, and broadcasts on week-days.

<i>Motley Magazine</i>

Motley Magazine is an Irish student publication affiliated with University College Cork (UCC). Motley Magazine was originally set up in 2006 by the UCC Journalism and Media Society until it became an official publication of the UCC media executive. Motley Magazine is published monthly during college term since its founding, except for a one year break during the 2009/2010 academic year. It is a free publication, distributed throughout the University College Cork campus.

An Cumann Gaelach is the Irish language and culture society in the University of Dublin, Trinity College. Established in 1907 by Ireland's first president Dubhghlas de hÍde, the society is among the largest societies in Trinity College, and one of the largest Cumann Gaelach student groups in the country.

With 33,284 students, it is Ireland's largest university, and amongst the most prestigious universities in the country. Five Nobel Laureates are among UCD's alumni and current and former staff.
