Nika Zorjan (born 3 December 1992) is a Slovenian singer and songwriter. Zorjan began her music career in 2010 as a contestant on the first season of Slovenija ima talent, the Slovenian version of Got Talent , later signing with Raay Music, the record label of Slovene duo Maraaya. She made her debut in 2012 with the single "Čas za nas", which was written by Maraaya. She later released the single "Nasmeh življenja" in 2013, which went on to become one of the most-played singles on Slovenian radio of the year in 2013 and 2014.

Zorjan has attempted to represent Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest on three occasions; in 2012, 2017, and 2018. She also performed as a backing vocalist for the Slovenian act in 2014 and 2015.

Early life

Nika Zorjan was born on the 3rd of December 1992 in Petanjci, a small village near the city of Murska Sobota. [1] [2] She grew up in a musical family, with her grandfather Leopold playing the accordion, and her father Janez playing guitar in the Slovenian band Nova Legija. [3]

Career

Zorjan began her career in 2010, after becoming a contestant on the first season of Slovenija ima talent, the Slovenian version of Got Talent , but did not place as a semifinalist. [4] In 2012, she began taking part in Misija Evrovizija , where she placed third behind Eva Boto and Nika & Eva Prusnik. [5] After competing, she was signed by Raay to his record label Raay Music. [6] She released her debut single "Čas za nas" that year, which went on to become a success in Slovenia, being nominated for the 2012 Eurodanceweb Award for Slovenia. [7] [8] [9] Her follow-up single "Problemom sredinc" was released later that same year. [10]

In 2014, Zorjan was a backing singer at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014, performing with Tinkara Kovač. [11] She later competed at EMA 2017 , attempting to represent Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "Fse". She placed fifth overall. [12] Zorjan also competed in EMA 2018 with the song "Uspavanka", but did not qualify to the final. [13] [14]

Zorjan often sings also in Prekmurje Slovene. [15]

Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest

Slovenia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 26 times since its debut in 1993. Since then, the country has missed only two contests, in 1994 and 2000.

EMA is the national contest in Slovenia to select the country's entry since 1996 to the Eurovision Song Contest. The contest has been held since the country's debut in the Eurovision Song Contest, and has been held every year since, except for on three occasions: 1994 and 2000, when Slovenia did not compete at Eurovision, and 2021, when after the cancellation of the previous Eurovision the 2020 representative was kept.

Maraaya

Maraaya are a Slovenian duo founded by Marjetka Vovk and Aleš Vovk (Raay) in 2014. The group's name is a combination of its members' names, while its pronunciation means "She has Raay" in Slovene. With help and international cooperation of well known Estonian Vita Pictura Productions, they became one of the few Slovenian artists to get an official VEVO channel on YouTube.

"Here for You" is a song by Slovene duo Maraaya. It was written by Raay, Marjetka Vovk and Charlie Mason. This is their second single released on 28 February 2015 at the Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 final night. The song represented Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015.

Manuella Brečko, better known as Manu, and formerly known as ManuElla, is a Slovenian singer, songwriter and music producer. She represented Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song "Blue and Red.

Slovenia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "On My Way" written by Omar Naber. The song was performed by Omar Naber, who had previously represented Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005 where he failed to qualify to the final with the song "Stop". Slovenian broadcaster Radiotelevizija Slovenija organised the national selection EMA 2017 in order to select the Slovenian entry for the 2017 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. After a two-week-long competition consisting of two semi-finals, and a final, "On My Way" performed by Omar Naber emerged as the winner after achieving the highest score following the combination of votes from a regional jury vote from six regions in Slovenia and a public vote.

BQL (group) Slovene pop group

BQL are a Slovene duo from Prevalje founded in 2016. It consists of two brothers; Rok and Anej Piletič. They are the first domestic artists at the Slovenian official singles charts SloTop50, who managed to hit the peak chart positions with two singles: one week with "Muza" and four weeks with "Heart of Gold".

"Nothing Left for Me" is a song by Slovene duo Maraaya. This is their fourth single released on 27 February 2016 at the Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 final night.

"It's Complicated" is a song by Slovene duo Maraaya, featuring Slovene duo BQL. It was written by Raay, Marjetka Vovk and Charlie Mason. This is Maraaya's fifth and BQL's third single which premiered on 26 May 2017 in front of the live audience on the Cankar street in Ljubljana. This song and video was officially released on 7 June 2017 at Nika Records. Since 17 June 2017 available worldwide on iTunes, Spotify and Deezer.

Raiven Musical artist

Sara Briški Cirman, better known by her stage name Raiven, is a Slovenian singer, songwriter, and harpist. She first garnered wide recognition while competing in EMA 2016 with the song "Črno bel", where she placed second. Raiven went on to return to EMA in 2017, placing third with "Zažarim", and has competed again in 2019 with the song "KAOS", placing second. Her debut studio album Magenta was released in 2017. In 2019 she released an EP album REM.

Slovenia originally planned to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. The Slovenian broadcaster Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTVSLO) used the national selection EMA 2020 to decide their representative. However, due to 2019-20 pandemic of Coronavirus, the contest was cancelled.
