Pearl Gladys Jansen (born 1950 in Bonteheuwel) is a South African beauty queen and singer who was first runner-up in the Miss World beauty contest in the UK in 1970. She was the first coloured woman to represent her country at this level. She competed as "Miss Africa South" due to apartheid. [1]

Biography

Jansen was 20 when she entered the 1970 beauty contest. She also has been portrayed in the film Misbehaviour. [2] She has stated that after the contest nothing changed for her because of apartheid. [3] She waited until she was 58 years old to fulfill her dream of becoming a singer. [4]

1970 Miss World contest

The 1970 contest was held in London, United Kingdom. It began with a row because the organisers had allowed two entries from South Africa, one black, Pearl Jansen, and one white, Jillian Jessup. [5] [3] Then during the evening there were protests by women's liberation activists and flour was thrown. [6] The comedian Bob Hope was also heckled. Jennifer Hosten, Miss Grenada, won, becoming the first black woman to win Miss World, and Pearl Jansen was placed second.

Jennifer Hosten is a Grenadian radio announcer, development worker, diplomat, author, model and beauty queen who won the Miss World 1970 contest, representing Grenada. She became the first black woman and the first woman from her country to win the title. The whole contest had been controversial even before the result had been announced. Afterwards allegations were made about the influence of the Prime Minister of Grenada, who was on the judging panel.

Anneline Kriel is a South African actress, model, and beauty queen. In 1974, Kriel won the Miss South Africa pageant; in the same year, upon resignation of the Miss World winner, the UK's Helen Morgan, Kriel was announced as the winner. She is the second South African to hold the Miss World title after Penelope Coelen in 1958. Since then, she has worked as a model, and actress.

Vivian Charlott Burkhardt is a beauty queen who represented Grenada in Miss World 2007 in Sanya, People's Republic of China, where she placed as one of the semi-finalists. Having graduated from The TA Marryshow Community College with an associate degree in Natural Science, she has completed her studies as a pre-med student at St. George's University. She received her bachelor's degree in Basic Medical Science, and completed her MD at St. George's University.

The Miss South Africa is a national beauty pageant in South Africa that selects South African representatives to compete in one of the Big Four international beauty pageants Miss Universe, and also selects another representative to participate in Sub-major international pageant Miss Supranational. The Miss South Africa organisation resorted to a contemporary format in selecting representatives which was inaugurated in 2018. Following their newer method, both a Miss World South Africa and a Miss Universe South Africa were selected as representatives. From 2021 onwards, the winner of Miss South Africa will be competing in Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Supranational. The current Miss South Africa 2022 is Ndavi Nokeri. On May 11, 2023 Miss South Africa Organisation has lost its license as a Miss World licensee holder to Carol Bouwer Productions which has taken over the license of Miss World South Africa pageant.

Miss World 1971, the 21st edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 10 November 1971 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, UK. 56 contestants competed for the Miss World and Lúcia Petterle from Brazil won the crown of Miss World 1971. She was crowned by Miss World 1970, Jennifer Hosten of Grenada. Although Petterle completed her reign as Miss World, she fell and broke her arm in the final month of her year and was unable to travel to London to participate in the Miss World 1972 contest.

Jennifer Hosten from Grenada won the crown of Miss World 1970. Although Miss World 1969, Eva Rueber-Staier of Austria, was present and took part in a dance routine before the announcement of the winner, the new Miss World was crowned by Bob Hope. The event was marked by controversy in the days beforehand, during the contest itself and afterwards.

Miss Grenada World beauty pageant selects representatives for the Miss World pageant from Grenada, an island country in the Caribbean Sea. The winner receives nationwide media exposure, thousands of dollars in prizes, an all-expense-paid trip to the Miss World contest and the opportunity to travel the world to act as an ambassador for various charitable causes.
