Perquimans County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 13,005. Its county seat is Hertford. The county was originally created as Berkeley Precinct. It was renamed Perquimans Precinct around 1684 and gained county status in 1739. Perquimans County is part of the Elizabeth City, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk, VA-NC Combined Statistical Area. The Harvey Point Defense Testing Activity facility is located in Perquimans County.
Kill Devil Hills is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,633 at the 2020 census, up from 6,683 in 2010. It is the most populous settlement in both Dare County and on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Kill Devil Hills Micropolitan Statistical Area is part of the larger Virginia Beach-Norfolk, VA-NC Combined Statistical Area.
Hertford is a town and the county seat of Perquimans County, North Carolina, United States. The current population of Hertford, North Carolina is 1,912 based on the 2020 census. The US Census estimates the 2021 population at 1,925. The last official US Census in 2010 recorded the population at 2,143. Hertford is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region and is part of both the Elizabeth City Micropolitan Statistical Area and the Hampton Roads region. It is named after the county town of Hertford, England.
Robert Lee Holloman was a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly who represented the state's fourth Senate district, including constituents in Bertie, Chowan, Gates, Halifax, Hertford, Northampton, and Perquimans counties. Holloman lived in Ahoskie, North Carolina and was a pastor at Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Murfreesboro. Holloman died in January 2007 after being elected in November 2006 to his third term in the state Senate. He died one day after his fellow Hertford County legislator, Howard J. Hunter, Jr. Robert Lee Holloman was the son of Daraious and Beatrice Vaughan Holloman.
James Augustus Hunter, nicknamed "Catfish", was a professional baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB). From 1965 to 1979, he was a pitcher for the Kansas City / Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees. Hunter was the first pitcher since 1915 to win 200 games by age 31. He is often referred to as baseball's first big-money free agent, and was a member of five World Series championship teams.
Manteo High School is one of ten schools located in Dare County, North Carolina. The high school was named after the Native American chief Manteo, who assisted the Roanoke Colony. Renovations to the school were completed in 2007.
