Macroeconomics is a branch of economics that deals with the performance,structure,behavior,and decision-making of an economy as a whole. This includes regional,national,and global economies. Macroeconomists study topics such as output/GDP and national income,unemployment,price indices and inflation,consumption,saving,investment,energy,international trade,and international finance.
New Keynesian economics is a school of macroeconomics that strives to provide microeconomic foundations for Keynesian economics. It developed partly as a response to criticisms of Keynesian macroeconomics by adherents of new classical macroeconomics.
Economic data are data describing an actual economy,past or present. These are typically found in time-series form,that is,covering more than one time period or in cross-sectional data in one time period. Data may also be collected from surveys of for example individuals and firms or aggregated to sectors and industries of a single economy or for the international economy. Robert Joseph Barro is an American macroeconomist and the Paul M. Warburg Professor of Economics at Harvard University. Barro is considered one of the founders of new classical macroeconomics,along with Robert Lucas Jr. and Thomas J. Sargent. He is currently a senior fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution and co-editor of the influential Quarterly Journal of Economics.
Olivier Jean Blanchard is a French economist and professor who currently serves as the Robert M. Solow Professor Emeritus of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,and as the C. Fred Bergsten Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He was the chief economist at the International Monetary Fund from September 1,2008,to September 8,2015. Blanchard was appointed to the position under the tenure of Dominique Strauss-Kahn;he was succeeded by Maurice Obstfeld. According to IDEAS/RePEc,he is one of the most cited economists in the world.
Maurice Moses "Maury" Obstfeld is a professor of economics at the University of California,Berkeley and previously Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund. He is also a nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
Njuguna S. Ndung'u is a Kenyan economist who is the Minister of Finance in the cabinet of President William Samoei Ruto since October 2022.
Ricardo Jorge Caballero is a Chilean macroeconomist who is the Ford International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also served as the Chairman of MIT's Economic Department from 2008 to 2011. He is a director of the World Economic Laboratory at MIT and an NBER Research Associate. Caballero received his PhD from MIT in 1988,and he taught at Columbia University before returning to the MIT faculty.
Jordi Galí is a Spanish macroeconomist who is regarded as one of the main figures in New Keynesian macroeconomics today. He is currently the director of the Centre de Recerca en Economia Internacional at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a Research Professor at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics. After obtaining his doctorate from MIT in 1989 under the supervision of Olivier Blanchard,he held faculty positions at Columbia University and New York University before moving to Barcelona.
The term exorbitant privilege refers to the benefits the United States has due to its own currency being the international reserve currency. For example,the US would not face a balance of payments crisis,because their imports are purchased in their own currency. Exorbitant privilege as a concept cannot refer to currencies that have a regional reserve currency role,only to global reserve currencies.
Macroeconomic theory has its origins in the study of business cycles and monetary theory. In general,early theorists believed monetary factors could not affect real factors such as real output. John Maynard Keynes attacked some of these "classical" theories and produced a general theory that described the whole economy in terms of aggregates rather than individual,microeconomic parts. Attempting to explain unemployment and recessions,he noticed the tendency for people and businesses to hoard cash and avoid investment during a recession. He argued that this invalidated the assumptions of classical economists who thought that markets always clear,leaving no surplus of goods and no willing labor left idle.
The chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is also the economic counsellor and director of the fund's Research Department and is responsible for providing independent advice to the fund on its policy issues,integrating ideas of the research in the design of policies,conveying these ideas to the policymakers inside and outside the fund and managing all research done at IMF. The chief economist is a member of the Senior Leadership of the IMF.
The new neoclassical synthesis (NNS),which is now generally referred to as New Keynesian economics,and occasionally as the New Consensus,is the fusion of the major,modern macroeconomic schools of thought –new classical macroeconomics/real business cycle theory and early New Keynesian economics –into a consensus view on the best way to explain short-run fluctuations in the economy. This new synthesis is analogous to the neoclassical synthesis that combined neoclassical economics with Keynesian macroeconomics. The new synthesis provides the theoretical foundation for much of contemporary mainstream macroeconomics. It is an important part of the theoretical foundation for the work done by the Federal Reserve and many other central banks.

Emmanuel Farhi was a French economist who served as the Robert C. Waggoner Professor of Economics at Harvard University from 2018 till his death in 2020. A specialist in macroeconomics,taxation and finance,he also served on the Conseil d’Analyse Économique from 2010 to 2010. On July 23,2020,aged 41,Farhi committed suicide.
The IMF Economic Review (IMFER) is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Palgrave Macmillan on behalf of the International Monetary Fund (IMF),whose main research publication it is. The IMF Economic Review has a focus on open economy macroeconomics,but also features content on global economic policies,international finance as well as international trade. Its current publication frequency is of four issues per year and its current editor and co-editor are the economists Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas and Ayhan Kose.
Hélène Rey is a French economist who serves as Professor at London Business School (LBS). Her work focuses on international trade,financial imbalances,financial crises and the international monetary system.
Giancarlo Corsetti,is an Italian macroeconomist and Professor of Macroeconomics at the European University Institute in Florence. He is best known in academia for his work on open economy macroeconomics and international economics. In March 2017,the IDEAS/RePEc overall ranking put him as the most influential economist at Cambridge University where he was teaching at the time.
Emi Nakamura is a Canadian-American economist. She is the Chancellor's Professor of Economics at University of California,Berkeley. Nakamura is a research associate and co-director of the Monetary Economics Program of the National Bureau of Economic Research,and a co-editor of the American Economic Review.
