Prostitute is the fourth studio album by German synth-pop band Alphaville, released in 1994. [2] The album was reissued in a remastered and expanded edition in November 2023. [3]
Following "the sci-fi-themed Afternoons in Utopia and the lushly orchestrated The Breathtaking Blue ", [4] it was Alphaville's first release for five years. Having "a great variety of styles", [5] this "jazzy and EDM-influenced" [4] "dark theatrical album proved too abstract to achieve any notoriety". [6] "The lack of commercial success led the band to return to its synth/dance roots with the following album, Salvation ". [7]
In 2019 Marian Gold recommended Prostitute, along with the 2017 Strange Attractor , to anyone who only knew Alphaville from Big In Japan . [5]
It is the last Alphaville album with Ricky Echolette.

Synth-pop is a music genre that first became prominent in the late 1970s and features the synthesizer as the dominant musical instrument. It was prefigured in the 1960s and early 1970s by the use of synthesizers in progressive rock, electronic, art rock, disco, and particularly the Krautrock of bands like Kraftwerk. It arose as a distinct genre in Japan and the United Kingdom in the post-punk era as part of the new wave movement of the late 1970s.
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) are an English electronic band formed in Wirral, Merseyside, in 1978. The group consists of founding duo and principal songwriters Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, along with Martin Cooper and Stuart Kershaw (drums). Regarded as pioneers of electronic music, OMD combined an experimental, minimalist ethos with pop sensibilities, becoming key figures in the emergence of synth-pop; McCluskey and Humphreys also established the "synth duo" trend in Britain during the 1980s. In the United States, the band were an early presence in the MTV-driven Second British Invasion.
Alphaville is a German synth-pop band formed in Münster in 1982. They gained popularity in the 1980s. The group was founded by singers Marian Gold, Bernhard Lloyd, and Frank Mertens. They achieved chart success with the singles "Forever Young", "Big in Japan", "Sounds Like a Melody", "The Jet Set", and "Dance with Me". Gold remains the only continuous member of Alphaville. They took their name from Jean-Luc Godard's movie of the same name.

The Breathtaking Blue is the third album by German synth-pop band Alphaville, released in April 1989. A companion video, Songlines, was released in September 1989. The CD release of this album was one of the first commercial CD+G format discs.
