The R721 is a Regional Route in Free State, South Africa that connects Kroonstad with Vredefort. [1] It was formerly part of the N1 national route, [2] before the Kroonvaal Toll Route was constructed.
The R721's northern terminus is a junction with the R59 in Vredefort. From there, it heads south for 5 km to meet the north-western terminus of the R720. It continues southwards for 70 km to Kroonstad, where it ends at an interchange with the R34 and the N1 highway north of the city centre.
This route from Vredefort to Kroonstad was formerly part of the N1, [2] before the construction of the Kroonvaal Toll Route.
The N1 is a national route in South Africa that runs from Cape Town through Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Polokwane to Beit Bridge on the border with Zimbabwe. It forms the first section of the famed Cape to Cairo Road.
Kroonstad, officially named Maokeng, is the fourth largest town in the Free State and lies two hours' drive on the N1 from Gauteng. It is the second-largest commercial and urban centre in the Northern Free State, and an important railway junction on the main line from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Maokeng is Sesotho and means "place of the thorn trees ".
The R24 is a major East-West provincial route in the Gauteng and North West provinces that links OR Tambo International Airport with Rustenburg via Johannesburg, Krugersdorp and Magaliesburg. The process of renaming the streets and freeway that form the route from Krugersdorp eastward to OR Tambo International after anti-apartheid stalwart Albertina Sisulu was completed in 2013.
The R28 is a provincial route in Gauteng, South Africa that connects Krugersdorp with Vereeniging via Randfontein. The R28 used to connect with Pretoria, but that section of the road is now part of the N14.

It is an alternative, but longer route to the N1 National Route between Johannesburg & Kroonstad.
The R104 is a regional route in South Africa that is the designation for some of the old sections of roads that were previously the N4, prior to upgrading. It connects Rustenburg in the North West province with Witbank in Mpumalanga province via Mooinooi, Hartbeespoort, Pretoria and Bronkhorstspruit. There is also a 50km section in Mpumalanga province connecting Middelburg and Wonderfontein.

The entire 40-kilometre route is part of the ZR Mahabane Toll Route maintained by the South African National Roads Agency, which goes from Bloemfontein to Kroonstad. Although there are no tollgates on this stretch at the moment, it is labelled as a toll road to the near public and to motorists using the road.
