Rashid Domingo

Rashid Domingo MBE (1937-2018) was born in Cape Town and grew up in District Six. Studied first medicine then chemistry at the University of Cape Town, graduating in 1959. Because the apartheid laws preventing his progress, in 1967 he emigrated, taking his family to the UK.

In 1971 he founded Biozyme Laboratories Ltd. in Maidenhead, which produced enzymes used in clinical diagnostics. In 1974 the company relocated to Blaenavon, Gwent. In 1987 he was awarded the MBE for his work. In 1987 created the Hajee Rukia Domingo Bursary in South Africa and later the Rashid Domingo Student Bursary at Aberystwyth University. He died of lung cancer in 2018 in London. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Thomas Edward Ellis, often known as T. E. Ellis or Tom Ellis, was a Welsh politician who was the leader of Cymru Fydd, a movement aimed at gaining home rule for Wales. Ellis was, for a time, the most prominent of a generation of Liberal politicians who emerged in Wales after 1886, who placed greater emphasis than the previous generation to a Welsh dimension to their politics. His early death in 1899 aged 40 added to the aura that surrounded his name.

Kudakwashe Donald Samunderu, born 12 July 1987 in Harare, Kuda is an accomplished batting all-rounder who represented the Zimbabwe Under-19s before moving to South Africa where he plays Premier cricket for Durbanville in Cape Town.A right-hand opening batsman and off-spin bowler Samunderu is a hard-working cricketer who made his first-class debut in 2004 as a 16-year-old in Zimbabwe's Logan Cup competition. He made an immediate impression and was called up to the national ODI squad that faced England the same year. Although he did not feature, Samunderu was later included in the Zimbabwe side for the ICC Under-19 Afro/Asia tournament in India the following year, where he finished third on run aggregates. In 2006, he starred for Zimbabwe during the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka helping his team to the quarter-finals only to lose out to eventual winners Pakistan. Samunderu struck half centuries against Pakistan and Ireland respectively and along with 7 wickets, he earned himself fifth place in the player of the tournament standings courtesy of two man-of-the-match performances. Samunderu was rewarded for his exploits with a full bursary from Sports Skills for Life Skills NGO (ss4ls.org.za) based at the prestigious University of The Western Cape .He spent the next five years training at this world class facility whilst also completing a Bachelor of Arts degree, then later a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. During this period, Samunderu was part of the UWC side that dominated the WPCA 1A Competition – winning the 2-Day Competition 3 times in four seasons along with one-day and T20 titles. After completing his studies, Samunderu set his sights on playing professional cricket in South Africa and potentially a return to Zimbabwe. Samunderu was signed by Durbanville Cricket Club at the start of 2012 and has continued to impress, both on and off the field.

Dr Margaret Elsworth MBE was the founder of the African Scholars' Fund and the African Scholars' Fund UK.

John Tyrrell was a British musicologist. He published several books on Leoš Janáček, including an authoritative and largely definitive two-volume biography. Tyrrell was born in Salisbury, Zimbabwe and worked as a professor of music and executive editor of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He died on October 4, 2018, aged 76.

John Ellis Meredith (1904–1981) was a Welsh Presbyterian minister and writer. He was the first Welshman to become president of the National Union of Students.

Johann Reinder Erlers Lutjeharms, was a leading South African marine scientist and an authority in the oceanography of the Agulhas Current, who authored a definitive work on the subject, The Agulhas Current. John Briscoe was a South African-born environmental engineer who was Visiting Professor of the Practice of Environmental Health in the Department of Environmental Health at Harvard School of Public Health. He was known as "Mr. Water" to environmental economists. At Harvard, Briscoe also held appointments at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) as Gordon McKay Professor of the Practice of Environmental Engineering, and at the Harvard Kennedy School. His career focused on efforts on the developing world to successfully manage and preserve water as a precious resource. In early 2014, he received the Stockholm Water Prize - the “Nobel Prize of Water" - for "unparalleled contributions to global and local management of water - contributions covering vast thematic, geographic, and institutional environments-that have improved the lives and livelihoods of millions of people worldwide.”

Errol Knott Moorcroft is a South African politician, farmer, and author who served as the member for Albany from 1981 to 1994 in the Parliament of South Africa. He later served as the Federal Chairperson of the Democratic Party from 1997 to 2000.
