Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior (born 15 July 1956) [2] is a South Sudanese politician who serves as the fourth Vice President of South Sudan. [1] [3] She served as the Minister of Roads and Transport for the autonomous government of Southern Sudan, [4] and as an advisor for the President of South Sudan on gender and human rights from 2007 to 2014. [2] She is the widow of John Garang,the late first Vice President of Sudan and the President of the Government of South Sudan,and the mother of Akuol de Mabior. [5] She is from the Dinka tribe of Twic East County of South Sudan. [6] [7]
She was born on 15 July 1956 in Bor Town. In 1986 she travelled to Cuba for military training. [2]
After the death of Dr. John Garang,General Salva Kiir took over his positions and became the first Vice President of Sudan and the President of the Government of South Sudan and commander in chief of SPLM/A. General Kiir appointed Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior as the Minister of Roads and Transport for the Government of South Sudan.
She continued to be a strong advocate for the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed by Dr. John Garang before his death on 30 July 2005. She continued to support the implementation of the peace process until the South attained independence on 9 July 2011. During that same year when her husband died Madam Rebecca visited the United States and met with President George W. Bush. She offered a message of appreciation for the American involvement in the quest for peace in South Sudan. In 2009 President Obama continued the efforts with Secretary Clinton and Ambassador Rice to see that the peace agreement is implemented in Sudan.
Madam Rebecca also received an interview by NPR. She spoke of her commitment to the liberation of South Sudan while she also respects the necessity of a united Sudan under the New Sudan Vision created by Dr John Garang in 1983. She visited Grinnell College and Iowa State University,the Iowa universities where her late husband completed his education before the Second Sudanese Civil War broke out in 1983. [8] Late Dr. John Garang and his wife Rebecca have six children who are active supporters of peace and stability in the new Republic of South Sudan.
According to the Sudan Tribune,Nyandeng met with South Sudanese president Salva Kiir Mayardit on 22 December 2013 to discuss security in the wake of the 2013 South Sudanese political crisis. [9]
Rebecca Nyandeng has expressed dissatisfaction with the way the government of Sudan in Khartoum implements the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). During the years of war,she joined the Southern army known today as Sudan People's Liberation Army and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement. She is known for her support for the right of self-determination for South Sudan although she has nothing against the united Sudan under a democratic rule of law. Millions of Southern Sudanese have been affected by the war between the North and South Sudan which has a long history from the time the British left Sudan in 1956. As a result of war over 2 million lives in South Sudan have been lost and four million South Sudanese are both internally displaced and externally living in other countries as refugees. After the arrival of peace in South Sudan,repatriation process is making headlines once in a while by the United Nations.[ clarification needed ]
Dr. John Garang de Mabior was a Sudanese politician and revolutionary leader. From 1983 to 2005,he led the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) during the Second Sudanese Civil War. He briefly served as First Vice President of Sudan for three weeks,from the comprehensive peace agreement of 2005 until his death in a helicopter crash on July 30,2005. A developmental economist by profession,Garang was a major influence on the movement that led to the foundation of South Sudan.
Salva Kiir Mayardit,also known as Salva Kiir,is a South Sudanese politician who has been the President of South Sudan since its independence on 9 July 2011. The Sudan People's Liberation Movement is a political party in South Sudan. It was initially founded as the political wing of the Sudan People's Liberation Army in 1983. On January 9,2005 the SPLA,the SPLM and the Government of Sudan signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement,ending the civil war. SPLM then obtained representation in the Government of Sudan,and was the main constituent of the Government of the then semi-autonomous Southern Sudan. When South Sudan became a sovereign state on 9 July 2011,SPLM became the ruling party of the new republic. SPLM branches in Sudan separated themselves from SPLM,forming the Sudan People's Liberation Movement–North. Further factionalism appeared as a result of the 2013–2014 South Sudanese Civil War,with President Salva Kiir leading the SPLM-Juba and former Vice President Riek Machar leading the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition.

William Nyuon Bany Machar He was a Southern Sudanese politician who was also one of the founders of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). He was appointed third in command after John Garang and Kerubino Kuanyin Bol. While he worked as a commander of the SPLA he lived in Itang,a small Ethiopian town in the Gambela Region.
Kuol Manyang is a South Sudanese politician. He is a member of the SPLM. He became governor of Jonglei state on 15 December 2007,following the first former governor,Philip Thon Leek from Dinka Bor,to curb cattle raiding and abduction of children in the region.
Lieutenant General Nhial Deng Nhial is a South Sudanese politician and a member of the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). Southern Sudan was an autonomous region consisting of the ten southern states of Sudan between its formation in July 2005 and independence as the Republic of South Sudan in July 2011. The autonomous government was initially established in Rumbek and later moved to Juba. It was bordered by Ethiopia to the east;Kenya,Uganda,and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the south;and the Central African Republic to the west. Kerubino Kuanyin Bol was a Sudanese rebel leader who was one of the founders of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and one of the leaders of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) during the Second Sudanese Civil War and was said to have fired the first shot in the conflict.

General elections were scheduled to be held in South Sudan by 9 July 2015,the first since independence. However,in light of an alleged coup d'état attempt and continuing conflict in the country this has been thrown into doubt,especially since no permanent constitution has been formulated. The South Sudan parliament voted in April 2015 to amend the country's transitional 2011 constitution to extend the presidential and parliamentary term until 9 July 2018,with 264 members in favour and a handful opposing it. It was postponed again to 2021 in July 2018. Following the peace agreement that ended the civil war,a transitional period of three years was agreed on,which would be followed by elections in 2023. In 2022,the transitional government and opposition agreed to move it to late 2024.
Gordon Muortat Mayen Maborjok (1922–2008) was a South Sudanese veteran politician and an advocate for the rights and freedom of the South Sudanese people. He was the President of the Nile Provisional Government (NPG) which led the Anyanya;Southern Sudan's first armed resistance to Khartoum which started in 1955. Muortat also served as Vice-President of the Southern Front (SF) and Foreign Minister in the Southern Sudan Provisional Government (SSPG).
The South Sudanese Civil War was a multi-sided civil war in South Sudan between forces of the government and opposition forces. In December 2013,President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar and 10 others of attempting a coup d'état. Machar denied trying to start a coup and fled to lead the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO). Fighting broke out between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and SPLM-IO,igniting the civil war. Ugandan troops were deployed to fight alongside the South Sudanese government. The United Nations has peacekeepers in the country as part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

On 4 January 2018,SPLM-IO rebels loyal to Chan Garang Lual attacked the western parts of Juba,the capital of South Sudan. The raid was part of the South Sudanese Civil War. Once in Juba,the insurgents were reportedly joined by Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) soldiers who were loyal to deposed chief of staff Paul Malong Awan. Following heavy fighting lasting until early 5 January,the rebels retreated into the countryside. Even though Chan Garang assumed responsibility for the attack,both the South Sudanese government and the SPLM-IO condemned the clashes,with the latter claiming that its forces had not been involved at all.
Mabior Garang de-Mabior is a South Sudanese politician and activist and the eldest son of John Garang,the founder of the ruling party,the Sudan People's Liberation Movement.
