Royel Otis are an Australian guitar-pop duo from Sydney. The band was formed in 2019 by Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic. They released three EPs, including Sofa Kings , before their debut studio album, Pratts & Pain , was released in February 2024.

History

Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic had known of each other around the Byron Bay area before Pavlovic sent Maddell some demos in 2019, with Pavlovic claiming this was "the collaboration he'd been chasing his whole life". [2] The band's name is a combination of the first names of Maddell and Pavlovic, respectively. [3]

In October 2021, the duo released their debut EP Campus. [4] This was followed in August 2022, with Bar n Grill. [5] Their third EP Sofa Kings , released in March 2023, peaked at number 43 on the ARIA Charts following its physical release in July 2023. [6] Their song "Going Kokomo" was included in the EA Sports FC 24 soundtrack. [7]

In October 2023, the group announced the release of their debut studio album Pratts & Pain , which was released on 16 February 2024. [8] [9] In January 2024, the duo received attention for their cover of Sophie Ellis-Bextor's song "Murder on the Dancefloor" on the Australian radio station Triple J, [10] which reached the ARIA Charts in February. [11]

Their third album, Pnau (2007), brought them further critical acclaim and success. "Murder on the Dancefloor" is a song written by Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Gregg Alexander, produced by Alexander and Matt Rowe for Ellis-Bextor's first album, Read My Lips (2001). Released on 3 December 2001, the song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and became a top-10 hit worldwide, charting within the top three in Australia, New Zealand, and four European countries. In the United States, the single reached number nine on the Billboard Maxi-Singles Sales chart. "Murder on the Dancefloor" is reported to have been the most played song in Europe in 2002.

Pratts & Pain is the debut studio album by Australian guitar-pop duo Royel Otis. It was released on 16 February 2024 via Ourness, and debuted at number 10 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The album's release was supported by five singles, starting with "Adored" and "Fried Rice", as well as tour dates around Australia, North America and Europe. It received positive acclaim from critics.

Sofa Kings is the third extended play by Australian guitar-pop duo Royel Otis. It was announced in January 2023 alongside its second single, and released on 31 March 2023. Following it's physical release in July 2023, the EP peaked at number 43 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
