Russell Lee Klika (born 1960) is a newspaper and U.S. military combat photographer, photojournalist [1] and trainer who grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, 100 miles north of Milwaukee.

Education

Klika attended Appleton High School but dropped out in the 10th grade. While in the military on a Western Pacific cruise, he obtained his GED.

In 1988, he graduated from the Eddie Adams Workshop. [2]

Military career

At age 17, Klika joined the U.S. Marine Corps and eventually became a combat photographer and trainer, serving 12 years. [3] Staff Sgt. Klika served three tours of duty in Iraq, the latest in 2006 with the 133rd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment of the Tennessee Army National Guard. [4] and, 2008, one tour of duty in Afghanistan, where United Press International regularly picked up and ran his photos on the wire. [5] [6] [7] He remained deployed on full duty as a combat photographer in Afghanistan until late 2009. His photos from the frontline have been featured on Tennessee's Volunteer State Guard online publication in a column titled "Klika's Korner." [8]

Photography

In late 1980, he left the Marine Corps and became head photographer at The Vista Press, a now-closed daily newspaper in Vista, California, where he covered the 1992 Rodney King riots in Los Angeles, California. [9] While at The Vista Press, in 1992 he was awarded Best of Show photo in the San Diego Press Club's annual county-wide journalism contest. He left the newspaper in 1992 to go to work for the Escondido Times Advocate while also freelancing for the Los Angeles Times .

In 2004, he joined the 278th Regimental Combat Team Tennessee Army National guard as a noncommissioned officer as head of public affairs, deploying with the unit for a tour in Iraq. After he returned, he became an operation warrior trainer for the first army and a combat photography trainer in public affairs at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh, Indiana. [10] When his service ended in February 2008, Klika became a contract employee for the National Guard in Smyma, Tennessee, where he currently supervises civilian photographers assigned to the National Guard.

Awards and appearances

In April 2007, Klika won first place in the Military Photographer of the Year contest for his portrait of an Iraqi child. [11] In February 2008, 40 of his Iraq photos were displayed at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. [3] In May 2008, Klika was awarded an honorable mention in the Art of Photography Show for a photo titled "Faces of Iraq," on display at the Lyceum Theatre Gallery in downtown San Diego. [12] In February 2008, he had two one-man shows and gave lectures at Point Park University [13] and Slippery Rock University [14] In May 2007, his photos of soldiers saving a dog along the Syrian-Iraqi border were featured on an animal rescue news site. [15]

Then, in late May 2008, his photos appeared with eight other combat photographers' in the "Eye of the Storm" gallery showing in West Hollywood, California. [16]

In June 2009, he was awarded the Bronze Star from the Army's Special Forces after going with his unit on more than 60 combat missions in Afghanistan and documenting the operations with photo images. [17]

Klika's photography work in Iraq is depicted in his book Iraq: Through the Eyes of an American Soldier, [18] with an introduction and foreword by author Cathy Scott.

Camp Shelby

Camp Shelby is a military post whose North Gate is located at the southern boundary of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on United States Highway 49. It is the largest state-owned training site in the nation. During wartime, the camp's mission is to serve as a major independent mobilization station of the United States Army Forces Command (FORSCOM). Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center is the largest reserve component training site, covering 136,000 acres (550 km2), allowing up to battalion-level maneuver training, Gunnery Table 8-12, field artillery firing points and a wide range of support facilities. This is the normal Annual Training location for National Guard and Reserve units located in Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee. However, units from across the country use its assets to support a variety of missions. The 2nd Battalion, 114th Field Artillery conducts its gunnery training and has the bulk of its combat equipment stored in the Mobilization and Annual Training Equipment Site (MATES) located there.

Military advisors, or combat advisors advise on military matters. Some are soldiers sent to foreign countries to aid such countries with their military training, organization, and other various military tasks. Foreign powers or organizations may send such soldiers to support countries or insurgencies while minimizing the risks of potential casualties and avoiding the political ramifications of overtly mobilizing military forces to aid an ally.

The 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team ("Thunderbird") is a modular infantry brigade combat team of the United States Army headquartered in Norman, Oklahoma. It is a part of the Oklahoma Army National Guard.

Camp Taji, also known as Camp Cooke, is a military installation used by coalition forces near Taji, Iraq. The camp is located in a rural region approximately 27 km (17 mi) north of the capital Baghdad in the Baghdad Governorate.

Bilal Hussein is an Iraqi Associated Press photojournalist based in Fallujah, Iraq. He was arrested in Ramadi by U.S. forces in April 2006 and detained on suspicion of aiding insurgents in Iraq. He was taken into custody to face charges in the Iraqi Central Court, reportedly over the circumstances of his photos, which were supplied by the U.S. military. American and Iraqi governments were criticized for violating the Geneva Conventions, and for detaining Hussein without evidence. He was finally released without charge in 2008. That year, Hussein won an International Press Freedom Award.

Alaska Army National Guard

The Alaska Army National Guard is a component of the United States Army and the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Along with the Alaska Air National Guard, it makes up the Alaska National Guard. Alaska Army National Guard units are trained and equipped as part of the United States Army. The same ranks and insignia are used and National Guardsmen are eligible to receive all United States military awards. The Alaska Guard also bestows a number of state awards for local services rendered in or to the state of Alaska.

Tim Hetherington British photojournalist

Timothy Alistair Telemachus Hetherington was a British photojournalist. He produced books, films and other work that "ranged from multi-screen installations, to fly-poster exhibitions, to handheld device downloads" and was a regular contributor to Vanity Fair.

Adam Ferguson, (b.1978) is an Australian freelance photographer who lives in New York City. His commissioned work has appeared in New York Magazine, Time Magazine, Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Wired, National Geographic, among others. Ferguson's work focuses on conflict and civilians caught amidst geopolitical forces. His portraits of various head's of state have appeared on numerous Time Magazine covers.

Craig F. Walker

Craig F. Walker is an American photojournalist. In 2010, Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography "for his intimate portrait of a teenager who joins the Army at the height of insurgent violence in Iraq, poignantly searching for meaning and manhood. In 2012 he won again the same prize in the category “Feature Photography”" for his photodocumentary "Welcome Home". He is on staff of Boston Globe.

Steve Russell (politician) American politician, retired soldier

Steven Dane Russell is an American soldier and politician. He served in the United States House of Representatives for Oklahoma's 5th congressional district from 2015 to 2019, after serving in the Oklahoma Senate from 2009 to 2013. Russell is a member of the Republican Party.

Benjamin Lowy

Benjamin Lowy is an American photojournalist. He is best known for his work as a conflict photographer in war zones, and is one of the early adopters of and a vocal proponent for mobile photography.

Peter van Agtmael is a documentary photographer based in New York. Since 2006 he has concentrated on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and their consequences in the United States. He is a member of Magnum Photos.
