The Erie Canal is a historic canal in upstate New York that runs east–west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie. Completed in 1825,the canal was the first navigable waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes,vastly reducing the costs of transporting people and goods across the Appalachians. In effect,the canal accelerated the settlement of the Great Lakes region,the westward expansion of the United States,and the economic ascendancy of New York State. It has been called "The Nation's First Superhighway."
The Great Lakes,also called the Great Lakes of North America,are a series of large interconnected freshwater lakes in the east-central interior of North America that connect to the Atlantic Ocean via the Saint Lawrence River. The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge is the only international wildlife refuge in North America. Established in 2001 and managed jointly by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Canadian Wildlife Service,it is located in a major metropolitan area. The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge is one of over 540 National Wildlife Refuges managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service within the Department of the Interior. The Commission to Explore a Route for a Canal to Lake Erie and Report,known as the Erie Canal Commission,was a body created by the New York State Legislature in 1810 to plan the Erie Canal. In 1817 a Canal Fund led by Commissioners of the Canal Fund was established to oversee the funding of construction of the canal. In 1826 a Canal Board,of which both the planning commissioners and the Canal Fund commissioners were members,was created to take control of the operational canal. The term "Canal Commission" was at times applied to any of these bodies. Afterwards the canal commissioners were minor state cabinet officers responsible for the maintenance and improvements of the state's canals.
Presque Isle State Park is a 3,112-acre (1,259 ha) Pennsylvania State Park on an arching,sandy peninsula that juts into Lake Erie,4 miles (6 km) west of the city of Erie,in Millcreek Township,Erie County,Pennsylvania,in the United States. The peninsula sweeps northeastward,surrounding Presque Isle Bay along the park's southern coast. It has 13 miles (21 km) of roads,21 miles (34 km) of recreational trails,13 beaches for swimming,and a marina. Popular activities at the park include swimming,boating,hiking,biking,and birdwatching.
Sandusky Bay is a bay on Lake Erie in northern Ohio,formed at the mouth of the Sandusky River. It was identified as Lac Sandouské on a 1718 French map,with early variations recorded that suggest the name was derived from Native American languages. The Thomas A. Edison Memorial Bridge was constructed across it in the 20th century to connect highways in Erie and Ottawa counties.
The Great Lakes megalopolis consists of a bi-national group of metropolitan areas in North America largely in the Great Lakes region. It extends from the Midwestern United States in the south and west to western Pennsylvania and Western New York in the east and northward through Southern Ontario into southwestern Quebec in Canada. It is the most populated and largest megalopolis in North America.
South Bass Island Light is a lighthouse on the southern end of its eponymous island in Lake Erie. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on April 5,1990 and is thought to be the only lighthouse in the United States owned by a university - Ohio State.
Erie Commodores FC is an American soccer team based in Erie,Pennsylvania which competes in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL),a nationwide amateur league at the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid. The team plays its home matches at Saxon Stadium on the campus of Mercyhurst University. In 2021,the Commodores added a pro-am women's team to play in United Women's Soccer. They also added men's and women's teams to the Ohio Valley Premier League for the 2022 season.
