Sarah Moyle (born 14 September 1969) is an English actress, known for her roles as Linda Fawcett in various stage productions of Jerusalem and Valerie Pitman in the BBC soap opera Doctors . Moyle also portrayed the recurring role of Caroline Swann in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale . For her role as Valerie in Doctors, Moyle won the award for Best Comedy Performance at the 2019 British Soap Awards.

Career

Moyle trained at Bodywork Dance Studios, has a B.A. in Performance Art from Middlesex University, and studied for six months at State University of New York. [1] From 1988 to 1991, she was a member of National Youth Theatre. Moyle began her career in 1992 with roles in theatre, [2] her first being in Lust at Theatre Royal Haymarket, directed by Bob Carlton. In her early career, Moyle portrayed roles in An Inspector Calls , Oliver! , Les Misérables and My Fair Lady . Her stage career also includes parts in Drowning on Dry Land and Private Fears in Public Places [3] written for her by Sir Alan Ayckbourn. In 2010, Moyle played the role of Linda Fawcett in Jerusalem [4] at the Royal Court Theatre [5] and the Apollo Theatre, before taking it to Broadway at the Music Box Theatre. [6]

In 2012, Moyle was cast in the BBC soap opera Doctors . [7] In 2016, Moyle was nominated for Best Female Dramatic Performance and Best Comedy Performance at the British Soap Awards, but lost out to Lacey Turner and Patti Clare who play Stacey Fowler and Mary Taylor respectively. [8] In 2018, she made her writing debut after writing an episode of Doctors, titled "The Wager", which aired on 31 May 2018. [9] In 2019, Moyle won Best Comedy Performance at the British Soap Awards. [10] In 2020, Moyle wrote another episode of Doctors, titled "Targeted Individual". [11]

Moyle announced her decision to leave Doctors in August 2022. Her final episode aired on 16 December 2022. [12] Following her exit from Doctors, she appeared in an episode of the Britbox period series Sister Boniface Mysteries . [13] She then toured the UK in the theatre production Jumping the Shark. [14]

Personal life

In September 2018, Moyle cycled 282 km across Rwanda [15] to raise money and awareness for Hope and Homes for Children. She is also an advocate for the Alzheimer's Society, and ran the 2000 London Marathon to raise money for the charity. [16] In 2020, Moyle raised money for the charity of which she is patron, Embracing Arts, [17] by cycling 46 miles around London. [18]

<i>Doctors</i> (2000 TV series) British soap opera

Doctors is a British medical soap opera, first broadcast on BBC One on 26 March 2000. Set in the fictional West Midlands town of Letherbridge, the soap follows the lives of the staff of both an NHS doctor's surgery and a university campus surgery, as well as the lives of their families and friends. Initially, only 41 episodes of the programme were ordered, but due to the positive reception, the BBC ordered it as a continuing soap opera. Doctors was filmed at the Pebble Mill Studios until 2004; production then relocated to the BBC Drama Village. Episodes are filmed three months prior to transmission. The soap is typically broadcast on weekdays at 1:45 pm on BBC One, as well as having classic episodes broadcast on Drama. It takes three annual transmission breaks across the year: at Easter, during the summer and at Christmas.

She made continued contact with the BBC and was eventually invited to audition for Imogen, and despite having no agent, she was cast in the role and made her first appearance on 4 August 2009. Valerie Pitman is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera Doctors, portrayed by Sarah Moyle. Valerie was introduced as a temporary receptionist at the fictional Mill Health Centre on 15 October 2012. Valerie is depicted as a kind, nosy and humorous character who enjoys getting involved in other people's lives. Her backstory involves growing up as an only child with no friends who dresses differently to other people, so since she feels like an outsider, she is desperate to be part of a unit of loved ones. Moyle was originally contracted on the soap as a recurring character, but after a positive reaction from viewers, she was promoted to a regular cast member. One of the storylines that accredited to her popularity was an issue-led storyline that saw Valerie diagnosed with hodgkin lymphoma. Moyle felt honoured to be given the storyline and found it interesting to play the storyline from a comedic perspective.

Emma made her first appearance on 2 October 2012, and since her arrival, her storylines in the soap have included her romances with character including Howard Bellamy, Lena Baker, Jasmine Dajani and Aashiq Sawney, dealing with her husband's assisted suicide, having a miscarriage, grieving over Howard following his sudden death and being the victim of a homophobic assault.

Laura Rollins is a British-Bajan actress, known for portraying the role of Ayesha Lee on the BBC soap opera Doctors, a role which she played from September 2014 to June 2020. For her portrayal of Ayesha, she won the award for Best Female Dramatic Performance at the RTS Midlands Awards. Dido Miles is an English actress. She is known for her role as Emma Reid on the BBC soap opera Doctors, for which she has won two awards for at the RTS Midlands Awards. From 2001 to 2002, she starred in the CBBC children's series Oscar Charlie.

Ian Midlane is an English actor, known for portraying the role of Al Haskey on the BBC soap opera Doctors. For his performance as Al, he won the award for Best Comedy Performance at the 2018 British Soap Awards.

Christopher Walker is an English actor, known for his roles as Larry 'Tiger' Barton in the BBC drama Merseybeat and Rob Hollins in the BBC soap opera Doctors. For his portrayal of Rob, Walker has been nominated for various awards, and in 2010 and 2023, he won the award for Best On-Screen Partnership at the British Soap Awards, alongside Jan Pearson who played his on-screen wife, Karen Hollins.

Jessica Regan is an Irish actress, known for portraying the role of Niamh Donoghue in the BBC soap opera Doctors. For her portrayal of the role, she won the award for Best Female Acting Performance at the 2014 RTS Midlands Awards, as well as the award for Best Newcomer at the 2015 British Soap Awards. Following her departure from Doctors, she starred in the BBC series Ill Behaviour. Regan also has numerous stage credits, having starred in productions including Blood and Gifts and Long Day's Journey into Night.
