The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC),alternatively the Great Commission Baptists (GCB),is a Christian denomination based in the United States. It is the world's largest Baptist denomination,and the largest Protestant and second-largest Christian denomination in the United States. In 1845 the Southern Baptists separated from the Triennial Convention in order to support slavery,which the southern churches regarded as "an institution of heaven". During the 19th and most of the 20th century,it played a central role in Southern racial attitudes,supporting racial segregation and the Lost Cause of the Confederacy while opposing interracial marriage. In 1995,the organization apologized for its history. Since the 1940s,it has spread across the United States,having member churches across the country and 41 affiliated state conventions.

The First Baptist Church of Hammond is a fundamentalist Independent Baptist megachurch in Hammond,Indiana,a suburb of Chicago. It is the largest church in the state of Indiana,and in 2007 was the 20th largest in the United States. Though founded in 1887 by Allen Hill,it was under Jack Hyles' leadership from 1959–2001 when it became one of the megachurches in the United States and during the 1970s had the highest Sunday school attendance of any church in the world. In 1990,the church had a weekly attendance of 20,000. It also operates Hyles-Anderson College,a non-accredited institution established for the training of pastors and missionaries,and two K-12 schools,called City Baptist Schools and Hammond Baptist Schools. John Wilkerson is the senior pastor at First Baptist Church.
Prestonwood Baptist Church is a Baptist multi-site megachurch based in Plano,Texas. It is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. It is one of the largest churches in America,with a membership of over 45,000 and a weekly attendance of around 17,000.
John Steven Gaines is an American Southern Baptist pastor,and the president of the Southern Baptist Convention. He is currently serving at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova,one of the largest congregations in the Southern Baptist Convention and has visited Israel 16 times. On Sunday,July 10,2005,the Pastor Search Committee of Bellevue Baptist Church presented Dr. Steve Gaines to the church congregation. At the conclusion of the services the Bellevue family overwhelmingly voted to call Steve Gaines as the seventh Pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church. Gaines succeeds the longtime Bellevue pastor Adrian Rogers.
The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests,known as SNAP,established in 1989,is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization support group of survivors of clergy sexual abuse and their supporters in the United States. Barbara Blaine,a survivor of sex abuse by a priest,was the founding president. SNAP,which initially focused on the Roman Catholic Church,had 12,000 members in 56 countries as of 2012. It has branches for religious groups,such as SNAP Baptist,SNAP Orthodox,and SNAP Presbyterian,for non-religious groups,and for geographic regions,e.g.,SNAP Australia and SNAP Germany.
James Austin Scott is an American politician who has been the U.S. representative for Georgia's 8th congressional district since 2011. The district stretches down the middle of the state,from just outside Macon to the Florida border. Scott served as a Republican member of the Georgia House of Representatives before being elected to the U.S. House.

He resigned his post as Senior Pastor in 2019 to become the full-time CEO of the Southern Baptist Executive Committee and run the day-to-day operations of the denomination. His resignation on October 14,2021 coincided with mounting pressure in the wake of the SBC sexual abuse scandal.

Pressler was a key figure in the conservative resurgence of the Southern Baptist Convention,which he initiated in 1978. He has been accused of sexual misconduct or assault by at least six men,some of whom were underage at the time of the alleged activity.

Mark James Keough is a businessman and a Christian pastor,radio host,and educator from The Woodlands,Texas,who has been serving as the Montgomery County County Judge since January 2019. He previously served as a Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives for District 15 in suburban Montgomery County north of Houston. On May 31,2017,Keough announced that he would not be running for re-election in 2018 to the Texas House but would instead contest the office of County Judge. On November 6,2018,Keough defeated Democrat Jay Stittleburg by a three-to-one margin.
Widespread sexual abuse cases in Southern Baptist churches were reported by the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News on February 10,2019. The report found roughly 380 clergy,lay leaders and volunteers had faced allegations of sexual misconduct,leaving behind over 700 victims since 1998. The extent of misconduct is further complicated by work within the Southern Baptist Convention to move sex offenders to other communities and resist attempts to address the culture of abuse.
Paul Chitwood is an American Baptist minister who is the 13th and current president of the International Mission Board,serving since 2018. He was previously executive director of the Kentucky Baptist Convention (2011–2018) and president of the Kentucky Baptist Convention (2005–2006).
Jimmy Raymond Allen was an American pastor and President of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) from 1977 to 1979. As president of the SBC,Allen was noted for his moderation and commitment to compassion in the church and was the last president before the SBC's conservative resurgence. After leaving his post as president,he continued to serve in the SBC before eventually becoming involved in other baptist organizations.
