Paul Rose, usually known as Scuba (also known by his SCB alias [1] ), is a British electronic musician, now based in Berlin. [2] Described as 'one of dance music's most inventive producers', he has released five albums, numerous singles and EPs, and a handful of compilation and mix albums. [3] His style has been described as dubstep with a later 'shift toward a brighter and more eclectic approach to production'. [4] In 2013, he won an award for Best Live Act from DJ Mag . [5]

History

Paul Rose began his musical career in late 90s Indie band, Violet, where he played keyboards alongside bass player, Razorlight founder, Johnny Borrell and received his first official song writing credit on the song "Sleepwalking" on the band's only release before acrimonious breakup live on stage where Paul and frontman, David Bartlett, would go on to destroy the venue's PA. He later founded the Hotflush Recordings label in 2003, where he released material by Mount Kimbie, Benga and Joy Orbison alongside his own music. [4] [6]

In 2007, Scuba relocated from London to Berlin. [7] He cited reasons including dissatisfaction with his place in the London scene: 'I had just started to make a living from making music and the position I was in musically was one that I wasn't particularly enjoying'. [8] He had performed a number of shows in Berlin before and maintained that he 'wanted to get away from London and nowhere in the UK would have fitted'. Berlin became his choice of residence partly as his friend Jamie Teasdale, of the early Dubstep duo Vex’d, had moved there. [8]

Established in Berlin by 2008, Rose released his debut album, A Mutual Antipathy, described as featuring 'subs, huge drum patterns, dry synths worthy of minimal's finest sound designers and emotional crescendos enough to perhaps even satisfy a trance lover'. [9]

His sophomore album, Triangulation, released in 2010, was seen as a 'breakthrough', and was described as 'expertly juxtaposing the dark with the romantic, the hectic with the serene'. [10] [11]

2011 saw a move away from Dubstep with the release of the singles, Loss, under his SCB alias, and Adrenalin, which contained 'three positively beaming slices of trancey (trancey!) techno' [12] [13] Both were listed in Resident Advisor's top 20 tracks of the year. [14]

The third Scuba album, Personality, was released in 2012. [15] Continuing the stylistic shift of the previous year, it was described as 'using prog house, trance, big beat, rave, old techno, and synth pop to create something stylishly retro. [16] In 2019, Mixmag listed the album as one of the best of the decade. [17]

After suffering health problems and an enforced break from touring, the release of fourth album, Claustrophobia, was released in April 2015. [18] The album was described as 'a major step up; the sonics are simply dazzling. Rattled keys, wind chimes, rubbed wineglass rims, half-heard voices, and all manner of incidental rustle serve to make the music leap from the speakers.' [19] Others saw it as a 'a lateral move rather than a step forward.' [18]

Following the release of A Mutual Antipathy, Rose forged close links with the Berghain nightclub, where in July 2008 he launched a series of parties named SUB:STANCE, together with promoter Paul Fowler. [8] He released an accompanying compilation album in 2010. [4] This was followed in 2018 by a retrospective compilation, Sounds Of SUB:STANCE, and an album of unreleased material produced during the event's five-year run to 2013, entitled SUB:STANCE In Retrograde. [20]

In addition to the SUB:STANCE mix released on Ostgut Ton , Scuba has also curated mix albums for the DJ-Kicks [21] (2012) and Fabric (club) [22] (2016) series.

After an extended break in which he focused on his SCB side-project, [23] Rose returned to releasing music as Scuba in 2019. [24]

Digital Mystikz are a dubstep production duo consisting of Mala, and Coki from the South London suburb of Norwood. Along with Loefah and SGT Pokes, who make up the group ASBO, they operate the DMZ record label and host the influential bimonthly nightclub DMZ, held at the Mass club complex in Brixton, London. BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel was an early supporter of Digital Mystikz, eventually putting them in his annual 2004 top 50 list at number 29. They are among the scene's most famous producers. Their song "Anti War Dub" appeared in the 2006 film Children of Men, although it wasn't included in the soundtrack. In the summer of 2008, Mala was chosen to headline the night portion of the Sónar Festival in Barcelona. In April 2011, Mala travelled to Cuba with Gilles Peterson who was returning to Havana to produce the second instalment in the Havana Cultura series. While Peterson recorded new material with local musicians, Mala began work on a new album Mala in Cuba, which was released in September 2012.

FabricLive.37 is a 2007 album by the British dubstep producers Caspa and Rusko. The album was released as part of the FabricLive Mix Series and was the first edition of the series to feature the dubstep genre of electronic music. Some of the tracks feature samples from the Guy Ritchie film Snatch, the Nick Love film The Business, the TV series The Armando Iannucci Shows and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The album featured other notable primarily dubstep producers such as Skream, Coki, Buraka Som Sistema and many more.

Their debut album Crooks & Lovers in 2010 received further acclaim and was listed as one of the defining albums of the decade by DJ Mag.

Post-dubstep is an umbrella term applied to a range of musical styles that have been influenced by the sparse, syncopated rhythms and heavy sub-bass of the UK dubstep scene. The breadth of styles associated with the term post-dubstep precluded it from being a specific musical genre in the early 2010s. Such music often references earlier dubstep productions as well as UK garage, 2-step and other forms of underground electronic dance music. Artists producing music that has been described as post-dubstep have also incorporated elements of ambient music and early 2000s R&B. The latter in particular is heavily sampled by two artists described as post-dubstep, Mount Kimbie and James Blake. The tempo of music typically characterised as post-dubstep is approximately 130 beats per minute.

Hotflush Recordings is a British record label. Founded by electronic musician Paul Rose, the label began as a UK garage night on Stokes Croft in Bristol when Scuba was studying at University of Bristol, booking the likes of Artful Dodger in the early 2000s. Later becoming a label it has released music by Scuba, Mount Kimbie, Boxcutter, Vaccine, Joy Orbison, Untold and many more.

Sepalcure is a musical collaboration between Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma. Their self-titled debut album, Sepalcure, was released in 2011 on the Hotflush Recordings label.

Untold a.k.a. Jack Dunning, is an electronic producer from London. He released his first solo record on Hessle Audio in 2008 and has since released on R&S Records, Soul Jazz, Clone Records and more. He released his debut album 'Black Light Spiral' on his own label, Hemlock Recordings in February 2014.

This Hospital Productions release bundled Rainbow Mirror with a limited cassette version of Godflesh's 2017 album, Post Self.
