Brown County is a county in west-central Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 38,095. Its county seat is Brownwood. The county was founded in 1856 and organized in 1858. It is named for Henry Stevenson Brown, a commander at the Battle of Velasco, an early conflict between Texians and Mexicans.

Luther Franklin Burleson was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach. He served as the seventh head football coach at Baylor University, coaching one season in 1907 and compiling a record of 4–3–1. Burleson was also the first head basketball coach at Baylor, coaching two seasons from 1906 to 1908 and tallying a mark of 10–9. In addition, he was the head baseball coach at Baylor for three seasons, coaching from 1906 to 1908 and amassing a record of 25–34.
James Neal Thomason was an American football player and coach. A native of Brownwood, Texas, was Thomason played college football at Texas A&M University and was a member of the 1939 Texas A&M Aggies football team, which won a national championship. He was selected in the first round with the fifth overall selection by the Detroit Lions in the 1941 NFL Draft.
Arnold L. Kirkpatrick was and American football player and coach. He was the second head football coach at the Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, serving for seven seasons, from 1917 to 1923, and compiling a record of 32–17–4. Kirkpatrick played college football at the University of Texas at Austin, as a halfback and quarterback. He later worked as a lawyer in Brownwood, Texas. He died in at a hospital in Brownwood, on April 5, 1953, after suffering a heart attack.
Billy Joe Anderson was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Howard Payne University from 1988 to 1991, compiling a record of 24–18. Anderson was born in Erath County, Texas, on July 20, 1925. During World War II he trained as B-29 tail gunner in the United States Army Air Forces, but did not serve overseas. After the war, he attended Pepperdine University, where he played college football from 1947 to 1949 before graduating in 1950. He then returned to his home state of Texas and coached football at a number of high schools. He later coached at Abilene Christian University, West Texas State University—now West Texas A&M University, Cisco College, and Tarleton State University. Anderson died on February 20, 2013, in Brownwood, Texas.
