Southern Illinois University is a public research university in Carbondale, Illinois. Chartered in 1869, SIU is the oldest and flagship campus of the Southern Illinois University system. SIU enrolls students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Originally founded as a normal college, the university today provides programs in a variety of disciplines, combining a strong liberal arts tradition with a focus on research. SIU was granted limited university status in 1943 and began offering graduate degrees in 1950. A separate campus was established in Edwardsville, Illinois in 1957, eventually becoming Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
The Illinois State Redbirds are the athletic teams that represent Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Teams play at the NCAA Division I level. The football team competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference while most other teams compete in the Missouri Valley Conference. The fight song is Go, You Redbirds.
The Golden Hurricane are the athletic teams that represent the University of Tulsa. These teams are referred to as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Before adopting the name Golden Hurricane in 1922, the University of Tulsa (TU) had many unofficial team nicknames including Kendallites, Presbyterians, Tulsans, Tigers, Orange and Black, and Yellow Jackets. The name "Golden Tornadoes" was chosen by TU football coach H.M. Archer (1922–24) based on new gold and black uniforms and a remark made during practice of the team "roaring through opponents". However, it was quickly discovered that the same name had been chosen in 1917 by Georgia Tech. Archer then substituted the term "hurricane" for "tornado" and a team vote prior to leaving for the game against Texas A&M confirmed the official nickname as "Golden Hurricane".
Barry Douglas Hinson is an American college basketball coach and most recently was the head coach of the Southern Illinois Salukis men's basketball team (SIU). He was born in Marlow, Oklahoma. Before SIU he was the Director of Men's Basketball Operations at the University of Kansas, head coach of Missouri State University and head coach of Oral Roberts University. On March 28, 2012, Hinson was announced the head coach of Southern Illinois University's men's basketball team.
The Southern Illinois Salukis are the varsity athletic teams representing Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The nickname comes from the Saluki, the Royal Dog of Egypt and the Persian greyhound, which ties into the fact that southern Illinois has had the nickname "Little Egypt" for just under 200 years.

The Salukis compete in the NCAA Division 1, and they play their home games at Banterra Center. As of March 2019, Saluki Hall of Fame basketball player, Bryan Mullins, has become the newest head coach of the Southern Illinois basketball program.

Itchy Jones Stadium is a baseball venue in Carbondale, Illinois. It is home to the Southern Illinois Salukis baseball team of the NCAA Division I Missouri Valley Conference. The field, opened in 1964, holds 2,000 spectators. The field is named for former Southern Illinois baseball coach Abe Martin, and the venue was previously known simply as Abe Martin Field. In 2014 after a complete renovation, the larger stadium was dedicated "Itchy Jones Stadium" after head coach Itch Jones.

Darren Darnell Brooks is American professional basketball player. A 6'3" 205 pound (93 kg) point guard / shooting guard, Brooks' professional career began in 2005–06 and has taken him to numerous countries and leagues around the world. He is best known in the United States for his collegiate career at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU), here he was the back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. He now coaches high school basketball at the charter school, High Point Academy and has his own basketball academy.
Mark Ryan Newman was an American professional baseball executive. He served as the senior vice president of baseball operations for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball and spent 26 years in high-level player development and player personnel posts with their organization. He first joined the Yankees in 1989 after 18 years as a college baseball pitching and head coach.

The 2007 Southern Illinois Salukis football team represented Southern Illinois University as a member of the Gateway Football Conference during the 2007 NCAA Division I FCS football season. They were led by seventh-year head coach Jerry Kill and played their home games at McAndrew Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois. The Salukis finished the season with a 12–2 record overall and a 5–1 record in conference play. The team received an at-large bid to the FCS playoffs, where they defeated Eastern Illinois and UMass before losing to Delaware in the semifinals. Southern Illinois was ranked No. 3 in The Sports Network's postseason ranking of FCS teams.
