Sulphur High School is a 5A public high school located in Sulphur, Louisiana, United States. It is a part of Calcasieu Parish Public Schools. The students are offered a variety of Advanced Placement courses as well as opportunities for dual enrollment in classes at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The Principal for the main campus is David Pool. The school has a Ninth Grade Campus which opened its doors in the 2004–2005 school year, and its principal is Katherine Clophus.

• Jackson William “JW” Stine

a. Sulphur quarterback who went to Normal College (today Northwestern State University) on a football scholarship b. graduated 1939 c. founder of Stine Lumber d. worked on many of Sulphur’s most recognizable businesses, including Immaculate Conception and LaSalette Churches e. married to high school sweetheart, Dee Dee Drost; married for 67 years; 7 children f. B-26 bomber pilot in WWII

• David Walker

a. captain of the football team and named Class 4A All-State Quarterback and Outstanding Offensive Player b. graduated 1973 c. became the winningest quarterback in Texas A&M history (now 2nd) d. married to Pam with 2 daughters e. authored I’ll Tell You When You’re Good in 2011 which was a collection of stories about growing up in Sulphur, playing for the Golden Tors, and his football career with the Aggies

• Dr. Sallye Toniette

a. graduated in 1946 at age 16 b. taught chemistry for 5 years before getting a medical degree from LSU c. completed her residency in Atlanta d. returned to Sulphur in 1959 and opened an ob/gyn practice; she assisted in over 10,000 births during her career e. The WCCH OB and Delivery wing is dedicated to her prolific medical career and her contributions to the community

• Dr. George Hardy Vincent

a. graduated in 1953 b. was senior class president and captain of the 1952 football team c. graduated from Texas A&M with his doctorate in veterinarian medicine in 1959 d. married his school sweetheart Nina LaFleur; have 4 sons e. joined father-in-law in precast concrete step business now known as Century Group; now has 5 locations serving 28 states f. served on the Calcasieu Parish School Board

• Jack Lawton Sr.

a. graduated in 1946 b. played both football and basketball at SHS c. was a member of the 1943 and 1944 SHS State Champion football teams d. has been a long-standing supporter of SHS; contributions include new football unforms, football scoreboard, training equipment for the athletic weight room, school’s first computer lab, etc.

• Jack Hebert

a. graduated in 1958 b. played football and baseball at SHS; named Outstanding Lineman and American Legion All-District Catcher c. spent 14 years in law enforcement; named Outstanding Young Law Officer for the State of Louisiana d. opened All Star Buick GMC Truck Inc. in 1987; received Mark of Excellence e. named West Calcasieu Chamber of Commerce Businessman of the Year f. has made numerous contributions to SHS, McNeese, and other organizations in the area

• Betty Julia Bailey Crouch

a. graduated in 1944 b. selected as an SHS beauty c. served as secretary/clerk for Principal BS Walker d. married Ernest Crouch e. opened a tax business in 1956, which was unheard of at that time; closed its doors in 2005 f. taught Sunday school at First Baptist Church for over 50 years

• William “Bill” Lawton

a. graduated in 1944 b. gave back extensively to SHS and the Sulphur community, including donating to cheerleading, football, band, golf, and rodeo c. arranged for the William T. and Ethel Lewis Burton Memorial Scholarship d. member of Henning United Methodist Church e. also made contributions to McNeese, Toys for Tots, Salvation Army, West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital, and the Red Cross, among others

• “BeBe” Saunier

a. graduated in 1933 b. past Sulphur Mayor (elected 1950, 1954, 1958, 1966, 1970, and 1974) c. played football, basketball, and ran track d. Attended McNeese then LaSalle Extension University (Chicago) and received a law degree e. served as president of the Rotary Club of Sulphur, among many other positions

• Kendrick Vere Cooper

a. graduated in 1957 b. was an Eagle Scout c. possibly Sulphur’s first National Meri Scholarship Finalist d. played trumpet in the SHS Marching Band e. received BS from Tulane in physics with dual minors in mathematics and chemistry f. participated in the design of the reactors and shielding for the Nimitz Class aircraft carriers and acting as KAPL Physicist at the initial testing of seven new nuclear submarines

• Richard Ellis Zachary

a. graduated in 1963 as valedictorian b. involved in several extra-curricular organizations while at SHS, including Latin Club, National Beta Club c. received the Bausch and Lomb Science Award as a senior d. as a mechanical engineering student at LSU, he drew an artificial heart and was granted a research grant for its development (financial cuts forced the program to be abandoned) e. had many inventions patented while working for Dow Chemical Corporation f. operated a peach farm, the R&R Peach Orchard, later in life

• Dr. Kent Seale

a. graduated in 1959 b. attended Tulane where he received his medical degree c. is a board certified surgeon in private practice since 1973 d. served in the US Army from 1967-1969 as a flight surgeon e. developed a surgical technique called minicholecystectomy, a paper about which was published in the Archives of Surgery in January 1999; he traveled to Sweden to present the technique to a group of surgeons f. married to Cathy; has 4 children and 5 grandchildren

• William “Bill” Lovejoy Henning Sr.

a. graduated in 1940 b. was an attorney, businessman, and philanthropist c. served in the Army Air Corps in the WWII’s European theater for 4 years d. graduated in 1949 from LSU Law School and returned to Sulphur to open a law practice e. took over operation of Cameron Telephone Company (now known as Cameron Communications) along with his brother after his father’s death

• John Bridges

a. Class of 1977 b. While attending SHS, was co-editor of the Tornado yearbook, member of the SHS band. c. Since graduation has helped emcee the Sulphur High School Beauty Pageant for over 30 years, has announced the SHS Marching band festival since it began in 1980, announced homecoming ceremonies at halftime, was on the Sulphur High Centennial Committee and emceed the event in 2013 d. Active in his church, as deacon and member of the media department at First Baptist Church of Sulphur e. Eagle Scout and serves as a volunteer with Calcasieu Area Boy Scouts of America f. Began broadcasting career in 1975 while attending SHS g. News anchor on KPLC since 1992 h. Past president of Crime Stoppers of Calcasieu Parish.

• Nina LaFleur Vincent

a. graduated in 1954 b. was a member of the SHS Royal Clippers Marching Squad c. was a member of the Cyclone Newspaper Staff, Beta Club, and Future Business Leaders ofAmerica d. in her junior year, won first place at the FBLA Convention and was named Miss Model Secretary for the State of Louisiana e. active member of Henning United Methodist Church where she provided food for various events and fundraisers f. has been involved in various community organizations including the Cancer Society, Junior League, St. Patrick’s Hospital Board of Counselors, the Free Community Clinic, the Foundation Board of the Calcasieu Parish Library, Board Member of Boy’s Village, and a member of the West Cal-Cam Hospital Foundation Board, the Louisiana High School Rodeo Association, Ducks Unlimited, Coastal Conversation Association g. was the head of the fundraising committee for the SHS Centennial in 2013

a. graduated in 1972 b. earned Bachelors and Masters degrees in education from USL (now ULL) c. received a doctorate from Columbia University’s Teachers College in NYC d. has worked at ULL as an assistant professor, professor, executive director of the Alumni Association, Vice President of University Advancement, and President of the University e. he served as Commissioner of Higher Education for the State of Louisiana and helped restructure the higher education governance, created the Louisiana Community and Technical College system, initiated teacher education and school reform, and formatted the state’s Master Plan for Postsecondary Education f. served as a cabinet member for three governor’s administrations g. married to Gail and has 2 children and one grandchild
