A veteran of Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions, Balfe's scoring credits include the films 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,Terminator Genisys, Mission: Impossible – Fallout and its sequel Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Bad Boys for Life, Black Widow, Black Adam, and Gran Turismo, as well as the video games Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Assassin's Creed III, Crysis 2, Skylanders, and the Call of Duty franchise. He has also scored the television series The Bible, Marcella, The Crown, and Genius, the latter for which he earned a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music. He also collaborates with directors Michael Bay, Chris McKay, and Christopher McQuarrie.

Along with Schwarzenegger, the film's cast features Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J. K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Matt Smith, Courtney B. Vance, Michael Gladis, Sandrine Holt, and Lee Byung-hun. The story follows Kyle Reese, a soldier in a post-apocalyptic war against Skynet, who is sent from 2029 to 1984 to prevent Sarah Connor's death. When Kyle arrives in the past, he discovers that the timeline has been altered by Skynet and that Sarah has been raised by a reprogrammed Terminator sent to protect her.

A vinyl edition of the soundtrack was released on May 19, 2017.

Enola Holmes (Music from the Netflix Film) is the soundtrack of the 2020 film of the same name, directed by Harry Bradbeer, starring Millie Bobby Brown as the titular character. Daniel Pemberton composed the musical score, which he described as a "blend of melodic and emotional orchestral music coupled with a nice level of messy quirky oddness". The album is headlined by the lead single — the end credits song, "Wings of Time" by Tame Impala, released three weeks ahead of the film.
