Todd Phillips is an American college basketball coach who is currently the head coach of the Utah Valley Wolverines team. [1]

Playing career

Phillips played college basketball at Snow College for a pair of seasons before finishing his playing career at Lewis-Clark State. [1]

Coaching career

After graduation, Phillips' first college coaching job was as an assistant at Westminster College for eight seasons, before spending another three at Salt Lake Community College. [2] In 2011, Phillips was named the head coach at Salt Lake CC, where in eight seasons he compiled a 205–58 overall record, including winning the NJCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship in 2016. [3] [4] During his time at Salt Lake, Phillips coached multiple NCAA Division I players, plus NBA player Gary Payton II.

In 2019, Phillips would join Mark Madsen's coaching staff at Utah Valley, where he became the team's associate head coach and was on staff for two WAC regular season titles, as well as the Wolverines' semifinal run in the 2023 NIT. [5] [6] [7]

On April 6, 2023, Phillips was promoted to head coach at Utah Valley when Madsen accepted the head coaching position at Cal. [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] Phillips proceeded to win 16 games that season, the most by any first-year head coach in Utah Valley men's basketball history since the Wolverines became a full Division I member in July of 2009.

The Utah Valley Wolverines represent Utah Valley University in NCAA DI collegiate athletics and sponsor 16 sporting programs. The Wolverines participate in the Western Athletic Conference. They finished the season 20–12, 13–3 in WAC play to win the WAC regular season championship. They advanced to the semifinals of the WAC tournament where they lost to Idaho. The Wolverines, led by fourth-year head coach Mark Madsen, played their home games at the UCCU Center in Orem, Utah, and competed as members of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). They finished with an overall record of 24–7, 15–3 in WAC play, to finish in first place. In the 2023 WAC tournament, they defeated Tarleton in the quarterfinals before losing to Southern Utah in the semifinals the following day. As the conference leader who didn't win their tournament, they were offered an automatic bid to play in the NIT. They defeated New Mexico, Colorado, and Cincinnati to reach the semifinal round, where they finally fell to UAB in overtime, 86–88. With a final record of 28–9, the 2022–23 season marked the Wolverine's most successful season to date as a D-I program.

The 2023–24 WAC men's basketball season began with practices in October followed by the start of the 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's basketball season in early November 2023. The conference began play in late November 2023. This is the WAC's 62nd season of basketball. The WAC competed with 11 teams due to two teams having left the conference since the prior season. Both New Mexico State and Sam Houston joined Conference USA effective July 1, 2023. The WAC tournament was held March 13–16, 2024 with the top eight teams competing for the automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament at Orleans Arena in the Las Vegas-area community of Paradise, Nevada.
