Tom Bouden (born 1971, Ostend, Belgium) is an openly gay Belgian artist, [1] [2] [3] best known for his comics albums, which often satirize old-fashioned Belgian comics.
Tom Bouden was born in Ostend, Belgium in 1971. He started making comics with his friends when he was 9 years old, and later studied animation in Ghent. He began to focus on gay themes when a gay youth group asked him to draw a promotional poster for them. He started working for several gay magazines, and in 1993 these comics were collected as the book Flikkerzicht. This was followed by Max en Sven, a semi-autobiographical story about a boy who falls in love with his best friend.
1990: a gay youth club asks Tom Bouden to make some illustrations for a new campaign. Soon, the figures on the poster (Max and Sven) have leading parts in their own comic. Based on these stories, Tom Bouden is asked to draw a comic on a regular basis for the monthly Belgian gay-magazine ZiZo. A year later, the Dutch magazine Expreszo follows.
1994: The gags from these magazines are collected in his first album, Flikkerzicht.
1997: Publication in the Dutch Gay-Krant, scripts for Disney-Comics and various texts for TV and theatre.
1998: Tom Bouden begins to work as assistant for Hec Leemans, author of the famous Flemish newspapercomic FC De Kampioenen .
2000: Publication in the German magazine 'Queer' and 'Freshmen', the Dutch Gay & Night and the English DNA-magazine. The 12th album is published in German and English. He's also busy writing stories for The Smurfs .
2002: The first Kid City-book, based on the site www.kidcity.be is published in French and Dutch by Editions Dupuis.
2004: A second English publication:the book Max and Sven (Green Candy Press), and a French publication: Max et Sven (H&O).
2007: The German publisher Bruno Gmünder starts publishing books by Bouden in English.
2010: Bouden reboots De Lustige Kapoentjes .
Bouden's comics have been translated into French, German, English, Spanish, and Italian.
Next to his gay comics, Bouden also works on adaptations of novels and children comics based on Flemish TV-shows. He worked very briefly as a writer for The Smurfs and Donald Duck.

Belgian comics are a distinct subgroup in the comics history, and played a major role in the development of European comics, alongside France with whom they share a long common history. While the comics in the two major language groups and regions of Belgium each have clearly distinct characteristics, they are constantly influencing one another, and meeting each other in Brussels and in the bilingual publication tradition of the major editors. As one of the few arts where Belgium has had an international and enduring impact in the 20th century, comics are known to be "an integral part of Belgian culture".

Dutch comics are comics made in the Netherlands. In Dutch the most common designation for the whole art form is "strip", whereas the word "comic" is used for the (usually) soft cover American style comic book format and its derivatives, typically containing translated US superhero material. This use in colloquial Dutch of the adopted English word for that format can cause confusion in English language texts.

Jozef Van Hove, better known as Pom, was a Belgian comics writer and artist, mainly known for the humorous-satirical adventure comic strip Piet Pienter en Bert Bibber published in Gazet van Antwerpen. Pom was one of the best known Flemish comics authors of the 1950s. Between 1955 and 1995, 45 comic books were published of his newspaper comic strip. In 2010, a new album of Piet Pienter en Bert Bibber was created by Tom Bouden, with the collaboration of Luc Cromheecke, Dirk Stallaert, Steven Dupré, Martin Lodewijk, Marc Verhaegen, Willy Linthout, Jean-Pol, Steve Van Bael, Kim, Michael Vincent, Wim Swerts, Marc Legendre, Charel Cambré and Hec Leemans.
David Mendes, who used the pseudonym Bob Mendes, was a Belgian accountant and writer of detective stories. He was born in Schoten, graduated in accountancy, fiscal duties and business administration and started his professional career as an accountant.
De Kiekeboes is a comic strip series created by Belgian artist Merho in 1977. The series appears in Dutch. It is first published in the newspapers Gazet van Antwerpen and Het Belang van Limburg and then published as comic books by Standaard Uitgeverij. The series is the best-selling comic in Flanders, but is unsuccessful abroad, with only a few publications in French and English.

Eric de Noorman was a Dutch comic strip, published in text comic format, and drawn by Hans G. Kresse from 1946 until 1964. The stories featured a Viking king, Eric, and his adventures overseas. Together with Kapitein Rob and Tom Poes, Eric de Noorman is widely considered to belong to the Big Three in Dutch comics history. Kresse's well documented stories and high quality drawing are praised and have influenced many other European comics artists. Eric de Noorman is one of the few Dutch comics to gain popularity in foreign translations. In the Netherlands, it was published in Het Vaderland, De Nieuwe Haarlemsche Courant and Tom Poes Weekblad, in Flanders in Het Laatste Nieuws and De Nieuwe Gazet, in Wallonia in Le Soir. The comic has been translated into French, Danish, Finnish, German, Spanish, Swedish, Portuguese and English. From 1948 on the stories were published in oblong format books at the low price of 75 cent.
Celebrity comics are comics based on the fame and popularity of a celebrity. They are a byproduct of merchandising around a certain media star or franchise and have existed since the mass media and comics came into existence in the 19th century. Celebrity comics are usually not held in high esteem by critics, because of their purely commercial nature. They are solely created to capitalize on media trends and therefore published so quickly and cheaply that drawings and narratives tend to be of very low quality.

Afine Kornélie Dik, better known as Phiny Dick was a Dutch illustrator and writer of children's books and comics. She was the wife of Marten Toonder from 1935 until her death.
