Vicksburg High School is in Vicksburg, Mississippi. It is at 3701 Drummond Street. As of 2023 the school has about 714 students. The student body is about 85 percent African American, 10 percent white, and 2 percent hispanic. One hundred percent of the students are listed as economically disadvantaged. The school has low test scores. [2] In 2023 the high school acores a B grade from the Mississippi Department of Education. [3]

Gators are the school mascot and the school colors are green and white. [4] The school competes in the Mississippi High School Activities Association as part of the Big Eight League. [5] It has rivalries with Warren Central High School and Murrah High School. [6]

LaToya Sims-Allen is the school's principal. [7] Kent Willis is the school's baseball coach. It won division championships. [8] Kristin Chapman helped lead the Missy Gators soccer team to state championships in 1996, 1998, and 1999. [9]

Rosa A. Temple High School served Vicksburg's African American students during segregation. [10]

In 1982, the school received national coverage after it began offering a course on the Mississippi River. [11]

Vicksburg is a historic city in Warren County, Mississippi, United States. It is the county seat. The population was 21,573 at the 2020 census. Located on a high bluff on the east bank of the Mississippi River across from Louisiana, Vicksburg was built by French colonists in 1719. The outpost withstood an attack from the native Natchez people. It was incorporated as Vicksburg in 1825 after Methodist missionary Newitt Vick. The area that is now Vicksburg was long occupied by the Natchez Native Americans as part of their historical territory along the Mississippi. The first Europeans who settled the area were French colonists who built Fort Saint Pierre in 1719 on the high bluffs overlooking the Yazoo River at present-day Redwood. They conducted fur trading with the Natchez and others, and started plantations. During the American Civil War, it was a key Confederate river-port, and its July 1863 surrender to Ulysses S. Grant, along with the concurrent Battle of Gettysburg, marked the turning-point of the war.

Gerard Thurston Warren is an American former college and professional football player who was a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for eleven seasons. He played college football for the University of Florida. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns third overall in the 2001 NFL Draft, and also played professionally for the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots of the NFL.

Michael Shane Matthews is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) for all or part of fourteen seasons during the 1990s and 2000s. He played college football for the Florida Gators, where he was both a second-team All-American and SEC player of the year in 1991 and 1992. Thereafter, he played professionally for the Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins, and four other NFL teams. Since retiring as a player, Matthews has lived near his college alma mater in North Central Florida, where he has hosted a sports talk radio program and coached high school football. In 2017, Matthews pled guilty to having unwittingly played a small part in a large health care fraud organized by former Florida teammate Monty Grow.

The 1921 Mississippi College Choctaws football team represented Mississippi College as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) during the 1921 college football season. The team was led by second-year head coach Stanley L. Robinson and College Football Hall of Famer, halfback Goat Hale. "Ten other players are on Hale's teams, but they are there merely to conform with gridiron rules." Hale scored 161 points and gained 2,160 yards as he was selected All-Southern. The team's stadium is today named Robinson-Hale stadium, for coach Robinson and Goat Hale.
