The school is named after John Francis O'Hara who was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Philadelphia from 1951 to 1960. It is located in Marple Township, Pennsylvania and was officially opened for the first time in 1963.

It opened in 1998, and the first class graduated from it in 1999. The school had previously been located in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
