[...] is a poetry collection by Palestinian American poet Fady Joudah, published by Milkweed Editions. [1] It was selected by Natalie Diaz, Gregory Pardlo, and Diane Seuss for the 2024 Jackson Poetry Prize and was a finalist for the 2024 National Book Award for Poetry. [2] [3]
The book's poems involve the experiences of Palestinians amid the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, both those on the ground as well as those in the broader Palestinian diaspora. Many of the poems are titled "[...]" after the book's title. [1] Joudah said the title "functions as a pictogram: a pictorial symbol that transports meaning by representing a physical object. It also evokes silence and erasure".
In an interview with Aria Aber, Joudah stated that he wrote most of the poems in a span of ten weeks between October and December of 2023. [4] Joudah told Boston Review that "It wasn't a conscious decision to write this book" but rather a survival response to "the first three months of carnage of Gaza." [5]
After the 2021 Israel-Palestine conflict in May of that year, Joudah submitted poetry to The New Yorker to publish as a means of providing a Palestinian perspective to the current events at hand. [6] The poem wasn't taken, after which Joudah, in June, published an essay entitled "My Palestinian Poem that 'The New Yorker' Wouldn't Publish" in Los Angeles Review of Books that included the aforementioned poem, "Remove", alongside reflections on May's events and Palestine's history writ large. [7] A revised version of "Remove" is included in [...] as one of the many poems sharing the book's name.
Diaz, Pardlo, And Seuss, in awarding him the 2024 Jackson Poetry Prize for the book, lauded Joudah's "lyrical gift" and "his courage to speak in the face of the unspeakable, in poems of lyric concision and intensity." [2] The book was shortlisted for the 2024 Forward Prize for Best Collection. [8]
Some critics observed the relevance of Joudah's poems to the ongoing Israeli–Palestinian conflict but were careful not to pigeonhole them to any one historical moment. [9] [10] The Chicago Review of Books called the book a "new, exceptionally present, and unforgettable collection" and stated it was "indicative of Joudah’s poetic prowess that these poems are as immediate as the destruction still facing Palestinians as I write this, and also have a timeless nature." [11] The Los Angeles Review of Books wrote that "One of the most striking aspects of the book is the oracularity of the voice, which speaks from and into the unseeable and unspeakable". [12] The Cleveland Review of Books argued that "Joudah’s poetry partially rejects significance grafted onto its language simply for responding to an event as it presently unfolds." [6]
Many critics analyzed the title's use of punctuation. The Michigan Quarterly Review opined that "Joudah’s chosen title and its unspeakability capture the lacuna of the present moment, both mirroring and indicting the unwillingness of American discourse, at least, to make declarations about an ongoing genocide." [13] AGNI said the title "sets the tone: this is a text designed to disarm and unsettle. To embody the erased, the unsayable." [14] The Green Linden Review argued it as "ellipsis and suspension points, omission and uncertainty, a fitting gesture for a book published during an active genocide by the Israeli government against the Palestinian people." [15] The Markaz Review saw it as a metaphor for silence and censorship. [16]
The Guardian selected one of Joudah's "[...]" poems for its poem of the week column in September of 2024. [17]
Mahmoud Darwish was a Palestinian poet and author who was regarded as Palestine's national poet.

David Dean Shulman is an Israeli Indologist, poet and peace activist, known for his work on the history of religion in South India, Indian poetics, Tamil Islam, Dravidian linguistics, and Carnatic music. Bilingual in Hebrew and English, he has mastered Sanskrit, Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu, and reads Greek, Russian, French, German, Persian, Arabic and Malayalam. He was formerly Professor of Indian Studies and Comparative Religion at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and professor in the now defunct Department of Indian, Iranian and Armenian Studies. Presently he holds a chair as Renee Lang Professor of Humanistic Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He has been a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 1988.
Victoria Chang is an American poet, writer, editor, and critic. She has experimented with different styles of writing, including writing obituaries for parts of her life, including her parents and herself, in OBIT, letters in Dear Memory: Letters on Writing, Silence, and Grief, and a Japanese form known as waka in The Trees Witness Everything. In all of her poems and books, Chang has several common themes: living as an Asian-American woman, depression, and dealing with loss and grief. She has also written three books for children.
Gregory Pardlo is an American poet, writer, and professor. His book Digest won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. His poems, reviews, and translations have appeared in The American Poetry Review, Callaloo, Poet Lore, Harvard Review, Ploughshares, and on National Public Radio. His work has been praised for its “language simultaneously urban and highbrow… snapshots of a life that is so specific it becomes universal.”
Remi Kanazi is a Palestinian-American performance poet, writer and organizer based in New York City. He is the editor of the anthology of hip hop, poetry and art, Poets for Palestine (2008), the author of two collections of poetry, Poetic Injustice: Writings on Resistance and Palestine (2011) and Before the Next Bomb Drops: Rising Up From Brooklyn to Palestine (2015). His political commentary has been featured by news outlets throughout the world, including the New York Times, Salon, Al Jazeera English, and BBC Radio. He has appeared in the Palestine Festival of Literature as well as Poetry International. He is a Lannan Residency Fellow and is on the advisory board of the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.
Ghassan Zaqtan is a Palestinian poet, author of ten collections of poetry. He is also a novelist, editor. He was born in Beit Jala, near Bethlehem, and has lived in Jordan, Beirut, Damascus, and Tunis. His book “Like a Straw Bird it Follows me” translated by Fady Joudah was awarded the 2013 International Griffin Poetry Prize. His most recent book of poetry, The Silence That Remains, also translated by Fady Joudah, was published in 2017 by Copper Canyon Press.
Max Ritvo was an American poet. Milkweed Editions posthumously published a full-length collection of his poems, Four Reincarnations, to positive critical reviews. Milkweed published Letters from Max and a second collection of Ritvo's poems, The Final Voicemails, in September 2018.
Nidaa Khoury is a lecturer at Ben-Gurion University in the Department of Hebrew literature. She is also the first Arab-Israeli poet to be included within the literature Bagrut curriculum in Israel.
Diane Seuss is an American poet and educator. Her book frank: sonnets won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry in 2022.
Jos Charles is a trans American poet, writer, translator, and editor. Her book feeld won the National Poetry Series and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. She is the founding editor of THEM, the first trans literary journal in the United States.

Mosab Abu Toha is a Palestinian writer, poet, scholar, and librarian from the Gaza Strip. His debut book of poetry, Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear (2022) won the Palestine Book Award and an American Book Award. It was also a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Walcott Poetry Prize.
Weijia Pan is a Chinese poet and translator. In 2023, his debut poetry collection, Motherlands, was selected by Louise Glück for the Max Rivto Poetry Prize and subsequently published by Milkweed Editions in 2024. A graduate of the University of Houston MFA program, Pan is a 2024–26 Stegner Fellow at Stanford University.

Spectral Evidence is a 2024 poetry collection by Gregory Pardlo, published by Knopf. It is Pardlo's first major poetry collection since Pardlo won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his 2014 book Digest. Spectral Evidence was longlisted for the 2024 National Book Award for Poetry.
The Earth in the Attic is a 2008 debut poetry collection by Palestinian American poet Fady Joudah; at the time, Joudah was a medical doctor and had worked with Doctors Without Borders since 2001. The book was published by Yale University Press after Louise Glück had selected it for the Yale Younger Poets Prize in 2007.
The Gregg Barrios Book in Translation Prize is awarded by the National Book Critics Circle (NBCC), USA. Named after the San Antonio playwright, poet and journalist Greg Barrios, the prize was agreed in 2021, and the first prize was awarded in 2022. It is awarded annually for “the best book of any genre translated into English and published in the United States”.
