The 11th Jakarta International Film Festival was held from 4 to 12 December 2009. [1] Riri Riza's Sang Pemimpi marks the first Indonesian film to open the festival. [2] The festival was closed by anthology film New York, I Love You . [3] [4] A total of 114 films from 24 countries were screened during the festival. [5]
The festival collaborated with Madani Film Festival to showcase Islamic-themed films. [6]

Lembaga Sensor Film (Film Censorship Board) banned the screenings of Balibo , a film about the Balibo Five, a group of journalists who were captured and killed while reporting on activities just prior to the Indonesian invasion of East Timor of 1975. The head of LSF, Muchlis Paeni, stated that the film discredited Indonesia. [7]

Balibo is a town in East Timor situated approximately 10 kilometres from the Indonesian border. It is located in the sub-district of Balibo, Bobonaro District.
The Balibo Five was a group of journalists for Australian commercial television networks who were murdered in the period leading up to the Indonesian invasion of East Timor. The Balibo Five were based in the town of Balibo in East Timor, where they were killed on 16 October 1975 during Indonesian incursions before the invasion. Roger East travelled to Balibo soon after to investigate the likely deaths of the Five and was later executed by members of the Indonesian military on the docks of Dili.

Herlina Christine Natalia Hakim is an Indonesian actress, film producer, and activist. Isyana Sarasvati is an Indonesian singer-songwriter and the founder of REDROSE RECORDS. She is a graduate of Singapore's Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and London's Royal College of Music. Known for her original compositions, she wrote all of the songs on her 2015 debut pop album, Explore! and on her three subsequent albums, Paradox (2017), Lexicon (2019) and ISYANA (2023). She has also performed as an opera singer in Singapore. She is the recipient of numerous Indonesian and international awards.
Ave Maryam, initially titled Salt Is Leaving the Sea, is a 2018 Indonesian romantic drama film written, directed, and produced by Ertanto Robby Soediskam. Starring Maudy Koesnaedi, Chicco Jerikho, Tutie Kirana, Olga Lydia, Joko Anwar, and Nathania Angela, it concerns a forbidden romantic relationship between a Roman Catholic religious sister and her pastor. Made under the sentiment of the lack of non-Muslim films in Indonesia, the film was shot for nine days in 2016, and features a soundtrack by Aimee Saras.
