The 1898 USFSA Football Championship was the 5th staging of the USFSA Football Championship. [1]

It was played on neutral grounds, in a league system with Standard Athletic Club being proclaimed champions of France after beating Club Français 3–2 in a play-off title-decider, since they had finished level on 18 points. [1] [2]

Standard AC and Club Français competed head-to-head for the title and both teams finished tied on 18 points, which meant that the title had to be decided in a playoff match that was held on 3 April 1898 at the Vélodrome de Courbevoie, which Standard won 3–2, thus winning for the second year straight. The club was founded in 1891 by Englishman Jack Wood, who had formerly played football in his home country. The 1894 USFSA Football Championship was the 1st staging of the USFSA Football Championship. This was the very first recognized football championship to be played in France. The tournament was held on the road between 15 April and 6 May 1894.

John Bertram Wood, better known as Jack Wood, was an English footballer and referee. He is best known for being the fundamental head behind the foundation of French club White Rovers in 1891, one of the first football clubs in Paris, and then serving the club as captain between 1891 and 1896. He then became a referee and officiated at the football tournament of the 1900 Summer Olympics, in which he oversaw a match between the representative sides of France and Belgium. He also refereed a match between the official sides of those two nations on 22 April 1906.

René Ressejac-Duparc was a French footballer who played as a midfielder and who competed in the 1900 Olympic Games, winning a silver medal as a member of the USFSA team, which was primarily Club Français players. With Club Français, he won back-to-back Coupe Manier titles in 1899 and 1900, and he also reached the finals of the 1900 Challenge International du Nord, and of the 1899 and 1900 USFSA Football Championship.
