As of the end of the 2022–23 season, St. John's ranked ninth with 1,922 total wins among NCAA Division I teams. St. John's has appeared in 30 NCAA tournaments, most recently appearing in 2019. The Red Storm's best finish in the NCAA tournament came in 1952 when they were NCAA runner-ups and made the Final Four. St. John's also made a Final Four appearance in 1985. Alan Seiden was an American collegiate and professional basketball player. He led St. John's University to the 1959 National Invitation Tournament title and later played professionally with the Pittsburgh Rens of the American Basketball League. Seiden was so highly respected by his peers that it took the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame only five years to induct him (1995).

Greg "Boo" Harvey is an American former basketball player who is best known for his collegiate career at St. John's University between 1987–88 and 1989–90. He starred as the point guard for the Redmen, and as a senior was the recipient of both the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award and Haggerty Award.

Melvin Utley was an American professional basketball player. He emerged as a star while playing at Far Rockaway High School in his hometown of Queens, New York, and earned all-city honors during his senior year in 1971. Utley played collegiately for the St. John's Redmen, whom he desired to play for due to the closeness of his family. In his three years with the Redmen, Utley led the team in scoring twice and was named team co-captain during his senior season. His 345 assists rank as the second-highest in program history by a three-year player.

McKoy played college basketball for the St. John's Redmen from 1977 to 1981 and was a two-time All-Big East Conference selection. He was drafted by his hometown New York Knicks but never played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and instead spent his three-year professional career in Spain.

The 1960 Colorado State College Bears baseball team represented Colorado State College in the 1960 NCAA University Division baseball season. The Bears played their home games at Jackson Field. The team was coached by Pete Butler in his 18th year at Colorado State.

The 1931 St. John's Redmen football team was an American football team that represented St. John's College of New York City during the 1931 college football season. It would be the final season of varsity football at St. John's for over four decades, as on April 29, 1931, the board of trustees announced that the football program would be dropped at the conclusion of the 1931 season for financial reasons. Football returned as a student-operated club sport in 1965 and became a varsity program in 1978 before being dropped again in 2002 due to Title IX concerns. Led by ninth-year head coach Ray Lynch and quarterback Bob Sheppard, the team compiled a 3–5–1 record. The team played its home games at Dexter Park in Queens.
