In June 1957, after one year of Sudan independence in 1956, a group of army officers and students from the Sudanese Military College led by Abdel Rahman Ismail Kabeida, led a coup against the first national democratic government that was led by Prime Minister Abdullah Khalil and the Sovereignty Council. [1] [2] Kabeida's motive was to resolve the confusion in managing the political scene and to seize power. The attempt was thwarted, [3] [4] and he and his comrades were sentenced to prison. Kabeida was released after the 17 November 1958 coup d'état and tried to topple the government again in November 1959. [5] He later became the General Director of the Sudanese Tourism Corporation. [6]
Jaafar Nimeiry was accused of leading the armoured corps to support the coup. As a result of his alleged involvement, he was arrested during the autumn of 1957. Following his arrest, he was temporarily relieved of his duties until April 1959 when he was assigned to the Southern Command in Juba. [7]
Geneina is a city in West Darfur, part of the dar Masalit region, in Sudan. It joined British Sudan at the end of 1919 through the Gilani Agreement, signed between the Masalit Sultanate and the United Kingdom, according to which it became a territory.
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan Abdelrahman al-Burhan is a Sudanese army general who is the de facto ruler of Sudan. Following the Sudanese Revolution in April 2019, he was handed control of the military junta, the Transitional Military Council, a day after it was formed, due to protesters' dissatisfaction with the establishment ties of initial leader Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf. He served as chairman of the TMC until a draft constitutional declaration signed with civilians went into effect on the 17th of August and a collective head of state Transitional Sovereignty Council was formed, also to be initially headed by al-Burhan.
Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, generally referred to mononymously as Hemedti, Hemetti, Hemeti, or Hemitte, is a Janjaweed leader from the Rizeigat tribe in Darfur, who was the Deputy head of the Transitional Military Council (TMC) following the 2019 Sudanese coup d'état. Since 2013, Hemetti has commanded the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He was considered by The Economist to be the most powerful person in Sudan as of early July 2019.
The Transitional Sovereignty Council is the collective head of state of Sudan, formed on 20 August 2019, by the August 2019 Draft Constitutional Declaration. The Order of the Two Niles – White and Blue Niles – is Sudan's second-highest honour after the Order of the Republic. The siege of El Obeid was a siege in El-Obeid, North Kordofan, Sudan, during the 2023 Sudan conflict. The battle began on April 15, and saw the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) capture the El Obeid airport from the Sudanese Army contingent in the city. Throughout April and May, the Sudanese Army repelled several RSF assaults on the city, although by May 30, the RSF fully surrounded the city and laid siege to it.
Dardiri Mohammed Osman was a Sudanese judge, writer and politician who was elected a member of the 1955 Sudanese Sovereignty Council.
In early 1972, Gaafar Nimeiry visited Saudi Arabia and engaged in dialogue with Sharif Hussein al-Hindi, the opposition leader, at the request of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia. The dialogue revolved around addressing past grievances and the political landscape. Nimeiry attributed past massacres to communists while Sharif criticised Nimeiry's regime. Offers and suggestions were exchanged, including Nimeiry proposing the Vice Presidency to Sharif, but no agreement was reached. Disappointed with the outcome, Sharif planned an attack on Khartoum with Libyan support.

Siti Alnfor Ahmed Bakr, nicknamed Sitna, was a 24-year-old Sudanese nurse and women's human rights defender (WHRD) in Sudan. She was killed on 17 November 2021, during protests in Khartoum North against the coup d'état led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. She was fatally shot by the security forces. Her face, depicted on black-and-white flags, became a symbol for the revolution.
Um Heitan, or Umm Heitan, is a village in Dalami, South Kordofan, Sudan, that is 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from south of Kadugli, the state capital. The area is an active war zone.
