Newly promoted sides Al-Riyadh and Al Jabalain were notionally relegated, though the first division and premier league would merge for the 1981–82 season, keeping them in the top flight for that year.

Al-Riyadh SC is a professional football club based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It currently plays in the Saudi Pro League. It was established in 1953 as Ahli Al-Riyadh, then changed its name to Al-Yamamah and finally to Al-Riyadh. Best known for its football team, Al-Riyadh also have squads in other sports.
The 2006–07 Saudi Premier League was the 31st Saudi Pro League season and the last to feature the Golden Four format. Al-Shabab were the defending champions, but they were eliminated by Al-Wehda in the first stage of the Golden Four. Al-Ittihad, who finished second with a 5-point difference from first place Al-Hilal, went on to win the league 2–1 in Riyadh. Hamad Al-Montashari's header gave Al-Ittihad their 7th league title in the 94th minute of the match.

Al-Ittihad won the 1996–97 Saudi Premier League, their second championship, the last being won in 1982.
The 1995–96 Saudi Premier League was won by Al-Hilal for the 7th time after defeating Al-Ahli in the final played in Jeddah. Al-Taawoun FC and Al-Raed, both of whom represented Buraydah were relegated.
Al-Shabab won the championship again for the second time and the second time in a row after winning the end of season championship final on penalties against Al-Ettifaq.
Al-Hilal won the championship for the 6th time in 1990.

The 1983–84 Saudi Premier League was the 8th season of Saudi Premier League since its establishment in 1976. Al-Ettifaq were the defending champions, having won their 1st title in the previous season. The campaign began on 5 October 1983 and ended on 17 February 1984. The league was contested by 10 teams the top 8 teams from the previous season as well as Al-Wehda and Al-Riyadh, who joined as the promoted clubs from the 1982–83 First Division.
