Councillors were elected through Plurality block voting, two per ward, where each voter could cast up to two votes.

There were 160942 ballots cast out of 382053 eligible voters, for a voter turnout of 42.1%.

The 1905 municipal election was held December 11, 1905 for the purpose of electing a mayor and four aldermen to sit on the Edmonton City Council, as well as five public school trustees and five separate school trustees. This was the second election to be held since Edmonton became a city.

There were also four proposed bylaws put to a vote of the electorate concurrently with the election.
On September 27, 1911, the voters of Edmonton approved by plebiscite the amalgamation of Edmonton with Strathcona. A majority of Strathcona voters also voted in favour of amalgamation.
