1984-85 was the 38th season of the Western International Hockey League.

The Western International Hockey League (WIHL) was a senior level ice hockey league that featured teams from the Western United States and Western Canada. It operated from 1946–62 and 1963–88. It grew out of the West Kootenay League, which operated in southeast British Columbia from the 1920s.

The Spokane Chiefs are a major junior ice hockey team that plays in the Western Hockey League based out of Spokane, Washington. The team plays its home games at the Spokane Arena. Their uniforms are similar to those of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens. Spokane consistently ranks in the top 10 in the Canadian Hockey League in attendance. The Chiefs won the Memorial Cup in 1991 and 2008. They also hosted the first-ever outdoor hockey game in WHL history, on January 15, 2011, at Avista Stadium versus the Kootenay Ice.

The 1985 Allan Cup was the Canadian national senior ice hockey championship for the 1984-85 Senior "AAA" season. The event was hosted by the Corner Brook Royals in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. The 1985 playoff marked the 77th time that the Allan Cup has been awarded.

The Allan Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the national senior amateur men's ice hockey champions of Canada. It was donated by Sir Montagu Allan of Ravenscrag, Montreal, and has been competed for since 1909. The current champions are the Stoney Creek Generals, who captured the 2018 Allan Cup in Rosetown, Saskatchewan.

The Nelson Maple Leafs were a senior men's ice hockey team. They won the British Columbia Senior Championship, the Savage Cup, seven times. They played in, but lost, the 1965 Allan Cup Final.

The Elk Valley Blazers were a senior men's ice hockey team that played out of Fernie, British Columbia. They played in the Western International Hockey League from 1979 until the league folded in 1988. They won the last league championship and the Savage Cup in 1987-88.

The Kimberley Dynamiters are a defunct Senior Amateur ice hockey club that played from 1946-1981 in the Western International Hockey League (WIHL).

Playoffs

Semi-finals

On Tuesday March 12, 1985, the Spokane Chiefs completed their four-game sweep of the hometown Kimberly Dynamites with a final score of 15-5. Gordie McKay scored four goals, with Bob Scurfield, Bruce Cullen and Gary Harpell scoring two goals apiece for the regular season champion Chiefs. The Chiefs won the best-of-seven Savage Cup semi-final series with scores of 8-1, 6-2, 11-2 and 15-5.^[2]

The Savage Cup is the trophy that is awarded to British Columbia’s senior ice hockey champions. This trophy was first presented in 1912-13 to the ice hockey team fielded by the Vancouver Rowing Club. and the Savage Cup will be awarded to the BC provincial champions for the 2009-10 season.

In the other series, the Nelson Maple Leafs defeated the Elk Valley Blazers four games to three in a series that went the full seven games.

The Spokane Chiefs and the Nelson Maple Leafs advanced to the Savage Cup final for the Western International Hockey League playoff championship and the right to compete in the Patton Cup playoffs for the Western Canada senior amateur title.

Final

In the best-of-seven final, the Spokane Chiefs defeated Nelson Maple Leafs four games to one to win the Savage Cup.^[3] The Spokane Chiefs advanced to the 1984-85 Western Canada Allan Cup Playoffs.
